Our Path to a Green Future: greentec steel is Making Progress 💚

Goals are important, but implementation is what matters most. To date, we have already allocated 60% of the total investment volume of approximately 1.5 billion EUR.

Reducing the use of fossil coke in the blast furnace, increasing the use of scrap, and utilizing renewable energy in our electric arc furnaces will enable a CO2 reduction of approximately 30% by 2029. Through innovative and efficient processes, we can further strengthen our position as a producer of high-quality steel grades. 🤝

Our path to a green future is more climate-friendly—and represents an important contribution to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to which we are committed. 🌎

INNOTRANS 2026 🚅

We are once again exhibiting at InnoTrans, the world’s largest trade fair for transportation technology, in Berlin in 2026.

At our 1,000 m² booth, voestalpine Railway Systems will present integrated rail infrastructure systems for high-performance and future-ready rail networks: from rails, switches, and fastening systems to digital monitoring and diagnostic solutions, as well as asset and maintenance management.

Highlights include, among other things, turnkey solutions for mixed and freight traffic, high-speed lines, urban mobility, and metro systems, all of which we supply from a single source. We will also be showcasing new switch heart technologies that reduce wear and increase track availability, innovative track and fastening systems, digital sensor technology and diagnostic solutions, as well as intelligent switch actuators and signaling technology.

As part of Capital Markets Day, we also presented our company-wide strategic direction and the outlook for attractive future markets such as rail infrastructure, aviation, warehouse technology, and pipes and profiles. 💫

Hy4Smelt is taking shape 🏗️

The construction of our Hy4Smelt demonstration plant in Linz is progressing right on schedule. As Austria’s largest climate protection research project, Hy4Smelt is an important part of our greentec steel transformation program.

The world’s first demonstration plant of its kind combines hydrogen-based direct reduction of ultrafine iron ores with an electric smelting process. In the HYFOR® tower, iron ore is reduced to sponge iron using hydrogen and then melted into liquid hot metal in the electric smelter.

With Hy4Smelt, we are researching a technology that can replace the entire blast furnace process and enable the production of high-quality hot metal without coal and with significantly reduced CO₂ emissions. 🌱
