‘They said I needed local experience to get work. I looked for jobs but couldn’t get anything.

One day, I came across this ACT government advertisement about the WESP program. I applied and I got in!

I'm not a paid employee here, but I wasn’t treated differently to other staff - I was just part of the team. Now after 8 weeks local work experience, I am confident I will find another job in Canberra.

It’s been very good for me. I just love my work. I just want to utilise my experience and my studies to work more.’

Rabia’s host Noel at Justice and Community Safety, said ‘We are a very busy, small team, but we have a lot of commitment to what we do. Having someone extra on board definitely helps. We have accomplished a lot.’

She adds, ‘I really recommend hosting a participant from WESP because you will find someone who is very committed to work - they really, really want to do a good job. They want to bring in their skills from overseas, and they go above and beyond.’

Applications are now open for the next Work Experience and Support Program (WESP).

It helps Canberrans from multicultural backgrounds who are unemployed get local work experience. It includes an 8-week unpaid work placement in ACT Government and 4 weeks skills training at CIT.

For more info, visit: https://www.act.gov.au/work-with-act-government/work-experience-and-support

Applications close Friday 31 July at 9AM. Apply now.
