To Rise Above Your Fear
This site is a companion to my memoir "To Rise Above Your Fear: One Season at a Time." It’s still a work in progress, much like life itself. It is honest.
Here you’ll find photos from the journeys, reflections from the seasons of my life, and ways to connect. About the author
James is a writer shaped by the four seasons of a life lived far from ordinary. Born into a childhood marked by abandonment and institutionalisation, he learned early how to survive in silence, how to read the world without guidance, and how to carry dignity even when no one was watching. Those early winters carved resilience into him, not bitterness, but a quiet strength that would become the foundation of everything that followed. As adolescence arrived, so did the restless pull of horizons. Spring carried him from Queensland dust to the vastness of Africa, where he found belonging in the bush, camaraderie in the military, and a sense of home in landscapes that pulsed with life. Africa did not just shape him, it claimed him. It taught him courage, humility, and the rhythm of a land older than memory. Returning to Australia with little more than grit, James carved out a life through sheer adaptability. He became a miner, a commercial diver, a shotfirer, a bush guide, a natural history cinematographer, and a man who could rebuild a gearbox on the edge of Lake Eyre with nothing but a gin pole and stubborn resolve. His work took him from deserts to rainforests, from film sets to remote outback tracks, always chasing the quiet wonder of the natural world. But it was in the long season of Autumn, the season of reflection, that James found his truest voice. A voice shaped not by hardship, but by gratitude. By the friendships that steadied him. By the dog who walked beside him. By the lanterns of kindness offered by strangers, musicians, teachers, and fellow wanderers. By the understanding that a life’s worth is measured not in possessions, but in presence. Though he never finished high school, James learned from life itself, from rivers, caves, battlefields, granite hills, and the kindness of those who crossed his path. His writing is not academic; it is lived. It is deeply human. His memoir is not a tale of accusation, but of resilience. Not a catalogue of trauma, but a testament to the small sparks that keep a person alive, a piano key, a peanut tree, a teacher’s kindness, the breath of a horse, the laughter of strangers, the wind dancing on water. Publishing his first book marks not an ending, but a release: a lantern held up for anyone who has ever stood at the edge of something terrifying and stepped forward anyway. James continues to write with the same intention that has guided his survival, to honour the memories that shaped him, to rise above fear, and to walk with others through the seasons of their own stories.

“Stop needing approval, stop explaining your decisions, the need for approval stops when you accept yourself. We have two ears and one mouth, so that we can listen more than we talk.”
“Whether you believe in an afterlife or a god, ultimately we are judged by the human spirit we carried through life.”
“When I can speak my truth and someone listens, I can wash it from my memory to make room for others.”
Another life's lesson. It's the story of the snake that wanted to cross the river and asked the tortoise could you carry me across? The tortoise was hesitant, but agreed, when they got across the river, the tortoise asked why didn't you bite me with your poison and eat me, the snake replied, if I did that I would have drowned and we both would have gained nothing.
My memoir is titled: To Rise Above Your Fear: One Season at a Time
The memoir is a remarkable journey through hardship, resilience, and the quiet beauty of human connection. Told with humility and emotional clarity, it traces a life shaped by abandonment, war, wilderness, and wonder. Written with a natural storyteller’s instinct, vivid, honest, and deeply human. The voice is unpolished in the best possible way: authentic, reflective, and free of pretence.
What emerges is not a tale of glory, but of endurance, kindness, and the small lanterns of light that guide us through the darkest seasons.
This memoir lingers long after the final page, a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the quiet courage of a man who chose to rise above fear.

To Rise Above Your Fear: One Season at a Time James never set out to be an author until family asked where he had been for the last fifty odd years. To family, James was a ghost in the family. So, the memoir was born. From the Australian outback to the African bush, this memoir follows a life shaped by hardship, humour, and the quiet resili...
From my memoir
Winter was not a season of happiness for me, but of betrayals. Yet even in the silence of an empty verandah and the cruelty of institutions, I found small sparks, a piano key, a teacher’s kindness, the breath of a horse or cow, a bird song, warmth in the paddock. They were fragile, but they reminded me that fear could be faced, and that even a forgotten child could carry dignity forward.
From my memoir
My spirit has never left Africa, it still lives inside of me like the embers of a fire that was once brightly lit, I keep those embers smouldering. Much like a gardener tends to his garden, he waters it, pulls the weeds out, letting the sun nurture the flowers planted.
Reflection's from my memoir:
There are people who enter our lives not to change our path, but to steady our steps. Christine was one of those rare souls. When she extended a hand of friendship, of grace, of acceptance, she offered me something I had never known, a place to rest, a place to breathe, a place to be seen without judgement.
In the years that followed, I made a promise to myself: the best way to honour her kindness was simply to survive, and to carry her lantern forward. If any part of my story lights the way for someone else, then I have lived that promise.
Belonging is not something that can be taken; it is something carried quietly, like embers kept alive in the heart. I have tended those embers all my life.
I carry people and places in my heart, so others can see what I see and live on with me.
Grief is a measure of how much someone or something meant to us, it is a gift not a burden.
