🔎 Details: A tiger snake was spotted inside a house yesterday before disappearing beneath the floorboards, leaving the residents wondering where it had gone.

The following day, neighbours spotted the snake nearby and alerted the residents. The snake was eventually located and safely removed.

💡Tips to reduce the risk

☀️ As the weather warms up, snakes may become more active and can occasionally enter homes in search of food, water or shelter.

Here are some simple ways to reduce the risk:

🔸 Keep doors and windows screened where possible, particularly those close to the ground.

🔸 Seal gaps and cracks around doors, windows, pipes and other potential entry points.

🔸 Keep grass and vegetation trimmed around your home, sheds and outdoor entertaining areas.

🔸 Remove piles of timber, building materials, rubbish and other clutter where snakes can shelter.

🔸 Keep rodents under control. Mice and rats can attract snakes, so secure pet food and rubbish and avoid leaving food scraps outside.

🔸 Keep gardens tidy and avoid dense vegetation immediately against the house.

🔸 Check garages, sheds and outdoor storage areas before reaching into dark or concealed spaces.

🔸 Keep pets away from suspected snakes and supervise them outdoors where snakes are known to occur.

⛔️ Do not attempt to catch, corner or kill it. Keep people and pets away, close internal doors if you can do so safely, and contact a licensed snake catcher to relocate it.

🌿 A DAY OF HERPING AT THE YOU YANGS!🦎

We headed out to the You Yangs with our good friend Nate from Snake Relocation Lara for a day of herping, exploring the bush and seeing what amazing reptiles we could find! 🔍

We were lucky enough to come across some incredible Australian wildlife, including a Jacky Dragon (Amphibolurus muricatus) and a beautiful Shingleback (Tiliqua rugosa)

There’s nothing quite like getting out into nature and finding these amazing animals in their natural habitat. ☀️

🐍🐾 SNAKE BITES & YOUR PETS — KNOW THE SIGNS! 🐾🐍

🔸 Snakes and pets can sometimes cross paths, especially around long grass, bushland and backyards. A snake bite can become a life-threatening emergency, so knowing what to look for and acting quickly can make a difference.

🚨 SIGNS TO WATCH FOR IN DOGS & CATS:
🤢Sudden weakness, wobbling or collapse
🤢Vomiting or excessive drooling
🤢 Difficulty breathing
🤢 Shaking or unusual behaviour
🤢 Dilated pupils or trouble seeing
🤢 Pale or abnormal-looking gums
🤢 Swelling or pain around a bite
🤢 Loss of coordination or inability to walk normally

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Not every snake bite leaves obvious puncture marks, and symptoms can develop over time. If you suspect your pet has been bitten, treat it as an emergency even if they appear okay.

🆘 WHAT TO DO:
✅ Keep your pet as calm and still as possible.
✅ Carry them if you can rather than allowing them to walk or run.
✅ Contact your veterinarian and get to a vet immediately.
❌ Don’t cut or suck the bite.
❌ Don’t apply a tourniquet.
❌ Don’t wait for symptoms to appear.

🐕🐈 Prevention helps too: Keep pets away from long grass and areas where snakes may be hiding, particularly during periods of increased snake activity.

We had such an amazing moment at Colac Lake today — we spotted a snake eating a frog! 😲 It was fascinating to watch nature up close and see the snake doing what comes naturally.

Snakes eat frogs as part of their natural diet and swallow their prey whole. A pretty incredible reminder of the amazing wildlife we have around us! 🌿
