Following on from a recent shared post. How do you have those difficult conversations with kids and teens and topics such as strangulation, consent and s*x?
This short article looks at where you might start.
Key points:
- curiosity and questions: what does your child know about these topics and how do they feel about them? What do their friends say about these issues?
- conversations whilst doing a task together or driving/walking are more comfortable that a sit down ‘lecture’
- be neutral and keep emotions under control (especially around topics such as misogyny which might get heated)
- normalise safe, non-judgmental conversations about difficult or awkward topics (and develop your own comfort level around these topics)
Remember to meet them where they’re at (find out where that is first!) And guidance and education work best when we build a relationship over time, so prepare for a few discussions rather than one epic afternoon.
Talking to your children about consent and s*xual violence can be hard. Here’s a few tips on how you can start the conversation
29/08/2026
Parents: please talk to your children about what safe relationships look like, and how po*******hy can offer dangerous (and potentially fatal) practices as ‘normal.’
Instructors in the self defence field: please include this context whenever you focus on strangulation. We cover a lot of ‘angry person grabs you’ scenarios, but not enough of these ‘quieter’ and equally dangerous contexts. Yes, there are more layers to address beyond physical technique (relationship dynamics, wanting to impress, the awkwardness of early exploration etc). But we need to normalise these conversations around personal safety and practices that are NEVER safe.
Education saves lives. Educate yourself, your kids, and your students.

They’re leaving for uni. Are they ready to stay safe without you?
You’ve packed the pasta, the IKEA bedding and the paracetamol.
But what about their safety plan?
💡 Safety Tip: Before term starts, visit their uni town together.
• Walk the route home from nights out
• Spot the well-lit paths
• Avoid dark shortcuts
• Talk about what “dodgy” looks and feels like

Here are some great points for discussion with the young people in your life. Doesn’t have to be all at once. Doesn’t need to be a lecture or an interrogation. Just time to connect and check in, ask questions and provide a safe space for conversation.

A quick reminder for Monday 27th of July:

Did you know there are multiple layers to any given scenario requiring self protection? A ‘self defence class’ may address one aspect (the physical ‘technique’) but leave out the other layers of what’s happening - due to time, experience, and expertise. So the technique you learn in a general class may not be appropriate or applicable to the actual scenario you’re in - and that’s if you remember it!
The bigger picture matters. Your individual reality and relationships matter.
Training is important, but adaptability and understanding social and psychological layers is crucial too.
I love Tammy’s explanation and the discussion she encourages - check out her video here and heaps more great conversations over at 500 Rising 😎
Consent is a crucial component to personal wellbeing and safety. It goes hand in hand with boundaries - being able to assert your boundary and have it be respected.
Children learn this early on through behaviour and modelling from grown ups. The earlier we can introduce this concept, the better. And it goes both ways - they learn about their own body autonomy, and learn to respect the body autonomy of others.
Here’s a great example of this conversation - this guy is doing amazing work with young people - go check him out 😎
