With the sky looking a little gloomy this morning, we were glad to see some happy faces for the club dive at Jervoise Bay. Vis was reported at around 4m and water temperatures are slowly rising with today showing 19 degrees.

Its always great to welcome new club divers, as well as see many regulars. We truly are thankful for your support and attendance.

Divemaster Jeff nailed hosting his first club dive, and we suspect you will see more of Jeff this coming season.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲?

Most dive computers will recommend a safety stop after many recreational dives, but you'll often notice experienced divers perform one even when their computer doesn't prompt them to. They're not ignoring technology. They're simply adding another layer of safety.

A safety stop is usually carried out at around 5 metres for three to five minutes before making the final ascent to the surface. Although it isn't normally mandatory on no decompression dives, it has become one of the best habits a diver can develop.

The reason lies in how your body deals with nitrogen during and after a dive.

Your body is still releasing nitrogen
As you dive, your body absorbs nitrogen from the compressed air you breathe. The deeper and longer you stay underwater, the more nitrogen dissolves into your body tissues.

As you ascend, the surrounding pressure decreases and your body begins releasing that dissolved nitrogen. Most of it is carried safely in your bloodstream to your lungs, where it is exhaled naturally.

A safety stop simply gives your body a little more time to continue this process before you reach the surface.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁
Many divers are surprised to learn that the greatest relative pressure change during any dive occurs between about 10 metres and the surface.

This is the stage of the ascent where nitrogen comes out of solution most rapidly and where buoyancy changes become much more noticeable.

Pausing at around 5 metres slows the final part of your ascent, giving your body additional time to eliminate nitrogen while reducing the chance of unnecessary bubble formation. It also encourages a slower, more controlled ascent through the most pressure-sensitive part of the dive.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼
A safety stop isn't just about nitrogen.
It gives you time to regain perfect buoyancy, check on your buddy, confirm your air supply, and prepare for a safe surface exit. If you're diving from a boat, it also provides an opportunity to listen for approaching vessels and ensure it's safe to surface.
Experienced divers also know that factors such as fatigue, dehydration, cold water, repetitive dives, and strenuous swimming can all increase physiological stress. A safety stop is a simple way of building an additional safety margin into every dive.

𝗜𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁:
Divers perform a safety stop because it gives the body extra time to release dissolved nitrogen during the most pressure-sensitive part of the ascent. Even when a dive computer doesn't require one, it's an easy habit that improves safety, reinforces good buoyancy control, and helps make every dive a little more conservative.

Divemaster Jeff and Instructor Lisa will be on-site at 8am to set up, with the dive/safety briefing at 8.30am and into the water for 8.45am

This site is perfect for newer divers, with shallow depths close to the wall with a max depth of around 12m in the centre.

As usual tanks and hire gear available for us to bring it to site for you, with the added bonus you don’t need to wash your equipment at the end, we will do it for you!

Fantastic Social Club Dive, a little wet from the start, however a few divers got to hear whales and spot a large seahorse.

Big Ed was our Divemaster in training that got the guys in and out the water safely then cooked up a storm.
