What’s in a name?

Our WA number plates tell a bit of our story.

EXPLOROZ is on the LandCruiser.
EXPLOREOZ is on the camper.

And there’s more than 26 years of history behind both.

The vehicles have changed over the years, but the names have travelled with us.

Our company dates back to 1997. After quitting our jobs and spending two years travelling Australia, our first travel website, Beach & Beyond, was really just for family and friends.

Then, in 2000, Michelle and David created a new online business called ExplorOz.

From the beginning, ExplorOz was registered as an Australian trademark. When registering the ExplorOz web domain, we also secured ExploreOz — a natural spelling variation — and the matching WA number plates you see on our LandCruiser and camper today.

But ExplorOz was never just a name.

The website became a major Australian 4WD, camping and caravanning resource. The ExplorOz Forum became Australia’s leading online 4WD, camping and caravanning forum, alongside extensive destination and route information, trip planning, technical articles and a major online store.

Today, ExplorOz produces mapping, navigation and tracking software, the ExplorOz Traveller app and our own EOTopo mapping. The website and Forum are still running too.

Long before social media, hashtags, YouTube, apps or the term “content creator”, the ExplorOz name was already travelling Australia with Michelle and David.

The vehicles have changed. The technology has changed. Even the internet has changed.

But ExplorOz remains the original — created by Michelle and David in 2000 and still operating 26 years later.

And whichever way you spell it — ExplorOz or ExploreOz — you’ll still find your way to us. 😉

This isn’t a lap of Australia.

For the past 114 days, ExplorOz founders Michelle & David have been travelling across and around Australia — but not following the usual circuit of hotspots and bucket-list destinations.

Their travels are part adventure, part fieldwork.

This is now the fourth consecutive year Michelle & David have taken their work on the road for an extended mapping expedition lasting many months. But heading across Australia to explore, research and gather information from the field goes back almost 30 years — long before working remotely from the bush was as practical as it is today. Starlink has certainly changed that!

They seek out roads and places they haven’t explored, and deliberately return to areas they haven’t seen for some time. Because things change.

Tracks change. Access changes. Places change. And sometimes the best way to understand what the data is showing is to see it on the ground.

Field observations from these trips are just one of the many sources used to verify information and help inform future updates to EOTopo, the mapping used in ExplorOz Traveller.

Modern maps can be built and updated using enormous amounts of digital data. But data still needs interpretation — and there’s enormous value in actually being out there.

Which explains why their Tracker looks like this. 😆

DONE THE GIBB? THERE’S MORE TO THE KIMBERLEY.

The Gibb River Road deserves its reputation. But it’s not the only way to experience the Kimberley.

If you’ve already done the Gibb, don’t have weeks to spare, are travelling when the popular routes are getting too busy — or the season is simply getting too hot — take a look at Duncan Road.

And no, we’re not suggesting the bitumen Great Northern Highway.

Duncan Road is a 4WD route that can be travelled with just one or two overnight camps, yet takes you through an astonishing variety of Kimberley country. Conditions vary along its length and with the season — from good unsealed road to rougher, rocky and corrugated sections, creek and river crossings and stretches where you need to slow down and drive to the conditions.

You’ll weave back and forth across the WA/NT border, pass through dramatically changing vegetation and ranges, and travel through country connected to the Ord River and Lake Argyle, with a completely different perspective on the eastern side of the Kimberley and Purnululu country.

There’s history all along the way too — old cattle country, homesteads and stock routes, reminders of the days when these roads weren’t built for tourists at all.

There are gorges, waterholes and places to stop and explore. And then there are those little tracks you notice on a good map that make you wonder: where does that go?

Perhaps the biggest surprise is how unbelievably quiet Duncan Road can be.

So if you’ve “done the Kimberley” because you’ve done the Gibb, maybe it’s time to look at the map again.
