Happy International Day of Democracy!

Did you know...

International Day of Democracy is celebrated around the world on 15 September each year.

It was established through a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 2007, encouraging governments to strengthen and consolidate democracy.

Marking International Day of Democracy 2026, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasised “the importance of bringing together people from across societies to enrich decision making, foster trust, and build more peaceful, inclusive and resilient societies.”

We think that’s worth celebrating!

The Centre for Public Integrity’s report, released today, shows the Government used taxpayer-funded grants to buy votes.

If Labor thought it could win your marginal seat at the last election, you ended up with an average of ten times more money under this non-competitive grant program than if it couldn’t win your seat.

The Grants Rules and Principles recommend the use of competitive, merit-based selection processes. But this was a closed, non-competitive, invitation-only grant program. The Government must explain this departure from the rules.

Grants must be delivered on merit and need, with accountability and transparency.

Our second Meet & Greet yesterday morning was a great chance for people from around the electorate to meet and chat about a range of issues, while the rain held off and the sun even popped out briefly.

A common theme emerging from our many conversations is frustration over the divisiveness in public discourse at the moment and how we can bring kindness back into the discussion.

On Saturday 5 September, we’ll be at Peninsula Farm Cafe in Maylands from 11am–12pm.

Sometimes a good conversation begins with something as simple as hello.

Grab a coffee, find the blue umbrella and come and say hi.

No speeches. No agenda. Just an opportunity to meet, have a chat and tell us a little about what matters to you in your community.

Come for five minutes or stay for a while.
