The Australian Medical Association’s inaugural Aged Care Report Card reinforces what we at Juniper have long been seeing: delays in older Australians being able to access care are having a ripple effect across the whole health system.

The AMA Aged Care Report Card, released this week, found:
🕐Older Australians are experiencing significant delays in accessing the aged care services they need, leading to longer stays in hospital after they are medically fit to leave.
🛏️ Hospital bed days used by people waiting for residential aged care increased by more than 60% in just three years, from 286,050 in 2020–21 to 460,122 in 2023‒24.
👩‍⚕️The median wait time for an aged care assessment has more than doubled since 2018-19.
🗓️ Some older people are waiting more than three and a half years to enter residential aged care after receiving approval.
⛔ Delays across the aged care pathway are affecting both older people and the broader health system by reducing hospital capacity.

These findings reinforce the importance of improving access to home and residential aged care and strengthening coordination between hospitals and aged care providers.

Juniper CEO Russell Bricknell commended the AMA on its report and said addressing bottlenecks in hospitals must remain a priority.

"Older Australians deserve timely access to quality care and support, wherever they live and whatever their needs," Mr Bricknell said.

“This report reminds us of the importance of working with governments and health sector partners to find solutions that improve outcomes for older people and help ensure care is available when it is needed most.”

A wonderful day out in Toodyay! 🚌🌺

Residents from Chrystal Halliday, Chrystal Gardens and Euroka, enjoyed a lovely day exploring the historic town of Toodyay last week.

Organised by Chaplain Larry Young, residents were picked up by bus and enjoyed a lovely day out exploring Toodyay.

The group wandered through the town’s charming shops and local attractions, including the famous Christmas shop and Coca-Cola Café, before finishing the day at Pelham Lookout.

It was a great day out and a wonderful opportunity to mingle with residents from other Juniper Retirement Living villages, meet new people and catch up with some familiar faces.

We were incredibly proud to sponsor this year’s WAFL Grand Final and support local footy the clubs, players, fans and communities that bring so many West Australians together and help keep people active and connected through the sport they love.

Through our partnership with the 2026 WAFL Grand Final, Juniper was excited to give our customers the opportunity to enjoy the big day with someone special. We also teamed up with 7West to give away 25 double passes, each including a $50 food voucher, so even more footy fans could experience the day at Optus Stadium.

For some of our customers, it was their very first time at Optus Stadium, while for others, it was a chance to get back to the footy and enjoy the atmosphere of a big game day.

It was great to see so many people stop by the Juniper tent throughout the day. We handed out plenty of our mini footy stress balls, had lots of great conversations, and gave visitors the chance to go into the draw to win $300. Congratulations to our lucky winner, who has now been contacted!

And if you were watching from home, you may have spotted Juniper’s Care Director Leanne Plowright, being interviewed just before the game, along with a few of our wonderful customers and team members appearing throughout the coverage.

All in all, it was an amazing day! We loved seeing the community come together, with people of all ages enjoying the footy.

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate Juniper Gerdewoonem Registered Nurse Linda Parry, who has received the Majarlin Clinical Preceptor Award at the Kununurra Recognition Awards. 🏅

Linda was nominated by two Majarlin students for her exceptional support, guidance and mentorship during their clinical placements.

Students praised Linda’s patience and willingness to share her experience, as well as the warm and welcoming environment she created for them to learn.

We’re so grateful to have staff like Linda who not only provide great care to our customers, but also help inspire and support the next generation of health professionals.

Thank you Linda, for creating such a positive experience for student nurses in Kununurra and inspiring future health professionals to consider working in remote Western Australia and supporting older people in our communities.

Meet Kaye (left) and Brenda (right), two Juniper Euroka Village customers who are heading to this Sunday’s 2026 WAFL Grand Final! 🏉

The pair have become good friends since joining the retirement village earlier this year and now catch up every Friday night in the library for the village’s famous Bevvy Club.

This Sunday, the two friends will head to Optus Stadium to enjoy the WAFL Grand Final, each bringing someone special along to share the day with.

Brenda’s love of AFL began while working in a residential aged care home, where she remembers residents gathering around the TV to cheer on the Eagles. Their passion sparked her own, and she’s since become a keen AFL fan who enjoys watching games in person and on the TV.

“I love the hype and atmosphere of being there. It’s very different from watching on TV,” Brenda said.

Kaye is a passionate Collingwood supporter who has followed the Magpies for years, both in Melbourne and since moving to WA. After enjoying her first live Collingwood game at Optus Stadium, she’s excited to head back for a fun day out at the WAFL Grand Final.

“I’ve told all my family I won WAFL tickets. I’m so excited!”

Earlier this month, students from Perth College popped into Juniper St David’s residential home to spend some time with our residents. 💛

Everyone spent the afternoon chatting, getting creative with arts and crafts and enjoying each other’s company.

Residential Manager Rose Bonete said the visits are always something the residents look forward to.

“Our residents really look forward to seeing the students each term. It’s lovely to see them sitting together, having a chat, getting creative and sharing stories. These visits bring so much happiness to our residents, and the connections they make are really special.”

At the end of each term, our residents often make thank-you cards for the students, which is a lovely way to show how much they appreciate their visits.

We’re so grateful to the students from Perth College for continuing to spend time with our residents and being part of our community.
