Text description provided by the architects.
The Kuakata Training Center, designed by CODEC Design Studio, is a purpose-built facility supporting skill development and capacity building for coastal communities in Bangladesh. Positioned close to fishing settlements, ecological zones, and tourist routes, it offers residential training on coastal resource management, sustainable tourism, and disaster preparedness. Developed through a phased construction process, the project emphasizes quality, sustainability, and contextual relevance. Local contractors and laborers were engaged from the outset, ensuring not only construction efficiency but also skill transfer and community ownership of the center.
Climate resilience has been central to the architectural approach. Given Kuakata's vulnerability to cyclones, flooding, and saline intrusion, the structures are elevated to withstand seasonal surges. Passive cooling strategies reduce dependence on mechanical systems. A long water body on the southern side functions as a freshwater reservoir in a region where groundwater is often saline or arsenic-contaminated. At the same time, it enhances thermal comfort by cooling southern breezes before they enter the building. Ventilation and daylighting are optimized through jali screens, which filter sunlight and reduce heat gain. Structurally, the center combines locally produced brick load-bearing walls with reinforced concrete beams and roofs, offering durability suited to cyclone-prone environments.
Material choices reflect a balance between resilience, ecological responsibility, and cultural identity. Locally made bricks reinforce regional craftsmanship, while green building features such as solar energy systems and rainwater harvesting units reduce the environmental footprint and promote self-sufficiency.
The interior layout supports a range of programmatic needs. Alongside classrooms and seminar halls, the center includes residential facilities for trainees and facilitators, dining spaces emphasizing fresh, locally sourced food, and multipurpose gathering areas. Outdoor courtyards, shaded walkways, and landscaped zones create opportunities for informal interaction and relaxation, fostering a sense of community within the learning environment.
Beyond functioning as an educational facility, the center acts as a platform for experiential learning. Its location near the coast allows training programs to integrate field visits, connecting participants with the environmental, economic, and cultural dynamics of the region. This immersive approach enhances both practical knowledge and community awareness.
Ultimately, the Kuakata Training Center is envisioned as more than an institution—it is a transformative space that weaves together education, environmental stewardship, and community development. Through participatory construction, climate-sensitive design, and sustainable operations, it stands as a model for resilient coastal development in Bangladesh and beyond.

Text description provided by the architects.
The project is located at the densest commercial area of Dhaka city, and the function and nature of business of TFB is quite in contrast with the site surrounding. It stands out from the surrounding corporate shiny high-rise buildings in its very humble and down-to-earth structure. As it goes, the edifice and the character of its spaces stand out in the utilization and interplay of natural resources like trees, plants, waterbody, the sun, wind, rain and shadows.
The architectural volume goes green rather than being a glass and concrete corporate building. This way environment- friendly local gas burnt bricks, corrugated CI & plastic sheets, custom-made mild steel frames for all the openings and cement finish floors take over expensive materials to adorn the structure with environment-friendly materials. To make a very minimum circulation, which is a semi-open space bound by only one-sided wall shared with the pods, the circulation configuration has been designed straight across the site and located in the middle just between the series of pods. It also plays a role to make the structure economic, which was the foremost goal to be hit.
Each of the pocket of open space between two consecutive pods has also been utilized as a common large function to be used during the leisure by a large number of users like food court, discussion area, play arena or exercise zone and even an amphitheater, which can be covered by tensile structure during the adverse weather for accommodating hundreds of trainees to attend a workshop or lecture session. The linear sky can be framed through the straight circulation spine over which polycarbonate sheet has been used as translucent canopy to let in daylight and make the spaces brighter. The trusses to hold the roofing system have been designed with customized MS rods such that it makes the structure light-weight.
Through the straight but eventful journey, one will find secured spaces like workstations, meeting rooms, training areas in various pods, which have been arranged in between the natural setting of a huge mango tree, wide grass covers, a few figs and neem trees and also some man-made landscape like an amphitheater and a lily pond. Above all, the building spaces are arranged as if the spaces are ‘weaving the nature’.
Initially, the existing trees on site appeared as an obstacle to design, but we overcame the challenge by using them as design elements. Finally, the trees have been preserved and seating arrangements designed under the tree canopies as a backdrop of natural setting in sharp contrast to the concrete jungle in the site surrounding. An amphitheater, designed to host a gathering of around 100 people, is the most striking feature in the compound. A demanded large lecture gallery has also been incorporated into the design so that the outdoor space, shaded with trees, is often bustling with lively activities like discussions or gossips during the leisure, and even lectures or informal meetings, creating an exciting atmosphere.

Ishtika Aalaya Residence
Architect : Studio Built Environment
Location : PANCHKULA, INDIA
Year Built : 2020
Project Size : 3982 Sq.ft
Principal Designers : Siddharth Mahim Bansal & Swati Kumawat

“Ishtika Aalaya” located in Chandigarh, India, this brick abode has been inspired by the clients’ longing for an earthy home. The composite climate of the place demands the building to be cooler for most of the year and requires ample sunlight during the harsh winters. Therefore, the layout has been dictated by the sun path analysis.
The project explores the possibility of combining the modern identity of a house with a traditional sense of a home. The multi-functional interior spaces provide room for transformation over time as per the user on a daily basis, forming the feeling of home.
The envelope that surrounds this home is individualistic in its character and contextual in its response with the use of 3 types of Jali patterns. Ochre-colored concrete planes complement the traditional red brickwork, imparting a strong identity to the façade.
The audacious brick arch takes the CenterStage, revealing itself as one enters the space through the arched door. The juxtaposed brick volumes and Ochre-colored Exposed Concrete planes with very selective fenestrations help in blocking most of the southwest front face.
Large fenestration on the kitchen wall is accompanied by a large plantation, thereby allowing filtered light inside. A modern, minimal kitchen and dining space on the right side of the courtyard is connected to the ramp on the extreme left.
This house is organized into three levels. The ground floor houses a single lady and her 10 years old daughter, the first floor is planned for long-stay visitors, and the second floor is intended for servant use. The design revolves around a courtyard that offers the users a private usable space rather than a mere light well, creating a dynamic dialogue between indoor and outdoor spaces.
This courtyard has been strategically positioned in the front (southwest zone) of the building which ensures pe*******on of winter noon sun into the dining space followed by the afternoon sun in the veranda annexed to the living area.
The ramp offers barrier-free access to the ground floor at the same time segregating the entrance to the upper floors through the side staircase yet interconnected from the inside. This ramp further leads to the backyard, contributing to an interesting continuity. Along with the backyard are two bedrooms, placed carefully to ensure privacy.
The master bedroom is a seamless space with an exposed grey concrete ceiling and wide fenestrations for a visual connection with the backyard. The interior finishes of the private spaces are planned in subtle tones, whereas the Ochre-colored exposed concrete ceiling adds vibrance to the living area.
The vibrance of the brick façade is ensured by using red mortar rather than grey mortar. The composition of these elements and spaces truly brings to users an interesting and enjoyable experience as they are accommodated in a series of spaces harmonized with a comfort of a home.

This simple farmhouse design is a humble residence that responds to the climate and site. It is a fun fact that the house is both an inward and outward looking house at the same time. One of the USPs of the simple farmhouse design project would be that it connects well with the most playful element of nature—the sun—through its dynamic perforated screens and courtyards that animate the spill-out spaces with playful shadows throughout the day. The site situates itself on the outskirts of Baroda, near a village named Aampad.
“With a character reminiscent of a country house, this farmhouse in Vadodara embodies an earthy aesthetic featuring rustic bricks, a sloping roof, and elegant Mangalore tiles. The open-plan design seamlessly merges indoor and outdoor spaces. Its interiors boast a soothing color palette, while the captivating sciography of brick jaalis enhances its charm, making the farmhouse a luxurious and comfortable retreat.”

Nishorgo Oirabot Nature Interpretation Centre
Architects: Vitti Sthapati Brindo Ltd, Ehsan Khan
Area: 288 m²
Year: 2008

Text description provided by the architects.
The main objectives of this centre, located in a protected forest and nature reserve in Chittagong District in the south of Bangladesh, are nature education and interpretation tours, in an effort to create awareness and promote biodiversity, conservation and eco-tourism. Nishorgo means environment in Bengali, and the central concept driving the project is to cherish the sanctity of nature.
The building itself is sensitively placed within the landscape: the reinforced concrete platforms of the ‘pavilion shelter’ float above the ground on structural walls; the concrete slabs are pierced by tree trunks where necessary, reflecting the project’s aim to create as little impact on the environment as possible. The visitor walks up the layers of platforms to a raised level to observe the surroundings. An exhibition area is enveloped in a compositional arrangement of openings framed by wooden lattices, and there is a space for viewing films with walls of exposed, burnt clay brick.

Rooted in a Bangladeshi land, not far from Commercial capital of the region, Chattogram, SHIKOR is a country house that rediscovers in the simplicity of forms all the charm of rural architecture in a contemporary way. Bengali term “SHIKOR” used to denote “ROOTS”: The origin from which it all begins. It is the home retreat of a local family, whose history inevitably is intertwined with the past of the land on which it is built.
Just as in almost all Bangladeshi families, the owners' ancestors were farmers. ; It is only in time that successive generations have moved from the countryside to neighboring urban areas in the years to come. That's why clients, both teachers, they live their retirement life in the city. Khan left his father's rural home to work as a teacher, living mainly in the quarters of school campuses. But his memories, or rather, his roots, have always kept him strongly connected to the village. And because the ancient dwelling, almost falling into disuse, was now losing all its original charm (and habitability), the Khans decided to build a new one. "The intention was to create a space for children and grandchildren in such a way that they would spend their time during the holidays, as well as to pass a witness on to the new generations.
The result is a large farmhouse on over 440 square meters of surface that winks at the most traditional constructions: similar to a farm, Shikor showcases the handcrafted workmanship of local artisans, making the most of all the natural resources granted by the landscape. Perforated outlying walls and skylights convert every corner of the house into a living museum of light and shadow.
The experiences of the spaces vary from sunrise to sunset, from summer to winter. Volumes of the built complex support the territory and what it can offer: the volume made from bricks, for example, vanishes from south to south-east to allow breezes to circulate from all three directions. And while the ground floor is divided between the Kachari,
The formal living room, located in an isolated front, and the dining Hall that, at the rear tip, is exposed into the nature through the Poschati verandah, The Projected Balcony. The layout of the upper floor is inspired by a resort. In order to maintain a balance between privacy and conviviality, the Gudam, the bedrooms, are allocated on the First floor. The fulcrum of the project is an indoor pond which, is placed into the Cavaedium, recreating the same atmosphere of a traditional Jolghat, a Screened Pond stair for female bath.
Made of terracotta Bricks, the Khans' country house also houses a series of furniture made of recycled wood, salvaged from old houses. The metal pots conventionally used for water are converted into graceful lampshades that alternate with the bamboo ones. All measures reduce costs and at the same time, keep memories alive.
