💧 What Is Flow Measurement? | Oil & Gas Instrumentation
Flow measurement** is the process of measuring how much liquid, gas, or steam is moving through a pipeline over a specific period of time.
In the Oil & Gas industry, accurate flow measurement is essential for **process control, production monitoring, custody transfer, and plant safety.
⚙️ How Does a Flow Measurement System Work?
Process Flow → Primary Element → Differential Pressure/Sensing → Flow Transmitter → 4–20 mA → PLC/DCS
🔹 Common Flow Measurement Technologies
1️⃣ Or***ce Plate
Creates a pressure difference across the restriction. The differential pressure is used to calculate flow.
2️⃣ Magnetic Flow Meter
Uses electromagnetic principles to measure the flow of conductive liquids.
3️⃣ Coriolis Flow Meter
Measures mass flow directly and can also provide density information.
4️⃣ Vortex Flow Meter
Measures the frequency of vortices created as fluid passes a bluff body.
5️⃣ Ultrasonic Flow Meter
Uses ultrasonic signals to determine fluid velocity and calculate flow.
🏭 Where Is Flow Measurement Used?
✔ Oil & Gas Processing
✔ Refineries
✔ Chemical Plants
✔ Water Treatment

📡 UNDERSTANDING THE 4–20 mA SIGNAL
Oil & Gas और Process Industry में **4–20 mA** सबसे commonly used analog signal standards में से एक है।
Level Transmitter process level को electrical current signal में convert करके DCS/PLC तक भेजता है।
📊 4–20 mA का Basic Relationship:
**0% Level → 4 mA**
**25% Level → 8 mA**
**50% Level → 12 mA**
**75% Level → 16 mA**
**100% Level → 20 mA**
🧮 Example:
अगर Level = **75%**
Formula:
**mA = 4 + (% × 16 / 100)**
**mA = 4 + (75 × 16 / 100)**
➡️ **Output = 16 mA**

👨💻 **Operator Display**
⭐ 4 mA से शुरुआत क्यों?
4 mA को **Live Zero** कहा जाता है।
इसका फायदा यह है कि:
**0% = 4 mA**
और अगर signal लगभग **0 mA** हो जाए, तो यह wiring/power या transmitter fault जैसी समस्या का संकेत हो सकता है, depending on the system and fault configuration.
The 4–20 mA signal is widely used in industrial instrumentation.
A transmitter converts the measured process variable into an electrical current signal.
📊 Typical Relationship:
0% → 4 mA
25% → 8 mA
50% → 12 mA
75% → 16 mA
100% → 20 mA
🧮 Basic Formula:
mA = 4 + [(% × 16) / 100]
Example:
If level = 75%
mA = 4 + (75 × 16 / 100)
➡️ 16 mA
