More than 80 dreamers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and changemakers from Botswana, across Africa, and around the world answered the call and applied to participate in the Startup World Cup Botswana Regional Competition 2026.

To every applicant, we thank you for believing in your vision and choosing to build.

Your applications showcased the incredible diversity of innovation emerging across sectors; from technology, AI, and digital solutions to agriculture, health, education, energy, mining, manufacturing, tourism, creative industries, and social entrepreneurship.

As we move into the next stage of the competition, we celebrate every single applicant. Because greatness does not begin when you win. Greatness begins the moment you decide to try.

Reflections

Of all the advertisements I came across yesterday, this one from UN CC:Learn stood out the most:

*"An apple is just an apple.

Until you start asking questions.

Where did it come from?

How was it produced?
What resources were used?
What impact does it have on the planet?
Learn to choose. Choose to learn."*

This message reminds us that every product, service, policy, and investment has a story behind it. What appears simple on the surface is often connected to complex environmental, social, and economic systems.

The same principle applies to health, innovation, entrepreneurship, mining, agriculture, and development. A hospital is not just a building. A startup is not just a business. A mine is not just a source of minerals. Behind each are questions about people, resources, equity, sustainability, resilience, and long-term impact.

As we work towards a more sustainable and inclusive future, perhaps the most important skill we can develop is curiosity—the willingness to ask deeper questions before making decisions. Better questions lead to better choices, and better choices lead to better outcomes for people and the planet.
