CONFISCATED LUMBER ALLEGEDLY SOLD TO PRIVATE INDIVIDUAL

Questions are being raised over allegations involving confiscated lumber and Belize’s Forest Department.

According to The Guardian Newspaper, cellphone videos reportedly show lumber being removed from a property in the Cayo District after authorities suspected it had been illegally extracted.

The report alleges the lumber was later transported using a Forestry Department pickup and trailer to another lumber yard, where it was allegedly being sold to a private individual.

Frontline Belize has not independently verified the allegations.

The claims raise serious questions about how confiscated lumber is handled and whether proper procedures were followed.

The Forest Department should provide a clear explanation.

TRACY PANTON MOURNS BRIANNA MYVETTE, CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE

UDP Leader Tracy Panton has joined Belizeans mourning the death of 20-year-old Brianna Myvette, describing her killing as another painful reminder of the toll gun violence continues to take on young Belizeans and their families.

Panton extended condolences to Myvette’s father, family and friends, saying her heart was especially heavy as a mother of two young daughters.

She described Brianna as an intelligent, talented and ambitious young woman who had plans for her future and stayed away from trouble, yet still became a victim of violence.

“Her life mattered. Her contributions to our Belizean society mattered,” Panton said.

Panton stressed Belize must reject apathy and pursue solutions to violence robbing young people of their lives, potential and futures.

She said protecting Belize’s youth and creating opportunities for them to thrive must become a national priority, calling Brianna’s death an urgent call for Belizeans to “say more, demand more and do more.”

Panton ended by praying for strength and peace for Brianna’s loved ones while wishing the young athlete rest in peace.

EDITORIAL: WHY ARE BELIZEAN ARTISTS MISSING FROM BELIZE’S APPLE MUSIC CHARTS?

A look at the current Apple Music Top Songs chart in Belize raises a serious question. Where are the Belizean artists?

The current Top 10 features international and regional acts such as Karol G, Drake, Valiant, Bad Bunny, Masicka and Kraff Gad. Not one Belizean artist appears in the Top 10.

The most recent Belizean artist to break through on Apple Music in Belize was Stig Da Artist with his self-titled album “Stig.” His achievement deserves recognition, but the rarity of such moments points to a wider problem.

Belizean artists continue to release music, invest in their work and promote their projects, yet local support often falls short. In other Caribbean and Central American countries, homegrown artists receive stronger backing from listeners, DJs, media outlets and promoters. Belizean talent is too often overlooked at home while foreign artists dominate local streaming habits.

Supporting Belizean music does not mean abandoning international music. It means giving our own artists space in our playlists, radio rotations and entertainment culture.

If Belize wants its artists to grow internationally, support must begin at home.

Stream Belizean music. Share Belizean music. Support Belizean artists.

EARL TRAPP UNFAZED BY PUP CHALLENGE, SAYS FOCUS REMAINS ON TWIN TOWNS

Four-term UDP Mayor Earl Trapp says he remains focused on serving the people of San Ignacio and Santa Elena as the 2027 municipal elections approach.

The Twin Towns remain the only municipality outside the PUP’s control, placing Trapp and his council among the ruling party’s main political targets.

Despite reports of heavy spending surrounding Sunday’s PUP Belize City convention, Trapp says his attention remains on the work of his administration and improving the quality of life for residents.

“I try not to lose focus on the works that have been ongoing in this municipality since 2015 when I first got elected,” Trapp said.

Asked whether he believes residents will return him to office in 2027, Trapp placed the decision in the hands of the electorate and his faith.

“The people will decide. With the blessing and the grace of God, we shall come back,” he said.

For Trapp, the road to 2027 remains centered on continued development, service and delivering for the people of the Twin Towns.

ASP AARON GAMBOA REMOVED FROM SPU COMMAND, REASSIGNED TO NATIONAL OPERATIONS OFFICE

Assistant Superintendent of Police Aaron Gamboa has been removed as commander of the Special Patrol Unit, SPU, ending a tenure of nearly a decade leading the unit.

According to 7News, Commissioner of Police Richard Rosado confirmed that Gamboa has been reassigned to the National Operations Office, where he will assist with overseeing police operations across the country. He will not serve as commander of the office.

Reports suggest the decision to replace Gamboa came following discussions at the ministerial level, where there was reportedly a view that the SPU needed new leadership. Those reports have not been officially confirmed.

During Gamboa’s tenure, the SPU expanded its operations nationwide and became a key unit deployed to crime hotspots and major security operations.

Neville Martinez will serve as interim SPU commander until a permanent commander takes over later this month.

UDP STANDARD BEARER EDWARD BROASTER DRAFTS CAMPAIGN FINANCE BILL, SAYS BELIZE SHOULD NOT WAIT MONTHS

UDP Belize Rural Central Standard Bearer Edward Broaster says Belize does not need to wait until the end of 2026 for proposed campaign finance legislation.

His comments follow renewed scrutiny over political spending after Minister of Governance Kareem Musa said he had committed to having campaign finance legislation drafted by the end of the year. Social partners have since called for legislation to be enacted within 90 days.

Broaster says he used artificial intelligence, guided by a set of defined prompts, to prepare his own draft campaign finance bill, which he plans to share with social partners for review.

According to Broaster, the draft proposes an independent campaign finance commission made up of social partner representatives, with no members from political parties or government.

The proposal also outlines penalties for campaign finance violations and seeks to establish clearer rules governing political donations, spending and accountability.

Successive governments and both major political parties have promised campaign finance reform over the years, but Belize has yet to enact comprehensive legislation governing political campaign financing.

Broaster believes his draft offers a starting point for wider national discussion and says reform should not require months of delay.
