Did you know you can be owed money by the government even if you didn't earn a single dollar last year?

If you're a student, between jobs, or just starting out, it's tempting to skip filing because "I didn't make enough to owe tax." But CRA can't send you benefit payments unless you actually file, including the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (the program that replaced the GST/HST credit in July 2026), worth roughly $533 a year for a single person with no kids, paid out quarterly.

For younger filers especially, that's real money left unclaimed for the cost of one tax return.

If you (or someone you know) hasn't filed because "there was nothing to report," let's fix that.

A few tax seasons ago, I had a client sit across from me with a tax bill that made him sick. His plan? "I'll just put money into my RRSP and get the deduction."

Except the RRSP contribution deadline for that tax year had already passed, it's 60 days after year-end, not the April filing deadline. By the time we were sitting there together, that option was gone, and so was the deduction he was counting on.

This is exactly why tax planning happens before tax season, not during it. A little planning in the fall or early in the new year can mean real savings by April but, only if someone's looking at it before the deadlines quietly slip by.

If it's been a while since anyone looked at your tax situation before year-end, let's change that.

Did you know there's a tax account that works like an RRSP and a TFSA combined?🥳

It's called the FHSA (First Home Savings Account), and most people still haven't heard of it. Contribute up to $8,000 a year (up to $40,000 lifetime) and get a tax deduction just like an RRSP. Then, when you use it to buy your first home, you withdraw it plus any growth, completely tax-free, just like a TFSA.

It's only been around since 2023, so it's still flying under the radar, especially for millennials trying to break into the Calgary market. And the contribution room builds every year whether you use it or not, so opening one sooner rather than later matters.

Wondering if it makes sense for you? Send us a message.

We all feel it. Taxes are Canada's biggest household expense and now there's a number to back it up

$50,721

This is what the average family paid for taxes or 42% of their income in 2025!

More than housing, food, and clothing combined. (Source: Fraser Institute's Canadian Consumer Tax Index, 2026 edition.)

You can't change what the system takes. But you can make sure you're not leaving money on the table by missing deductions or credits you're actually entitled to and that's exactly where I come in.

If it's been a while since someone actually looked at your full tax picture, let's chat.
