The Way to Your Financial Success
💼 Salary or dividends? For incorporated doctors, the right answer depends on your overall tax and financial plan.
Taking unplanned transfers from your corporation throughout the year may feel simple, but it can create tax inefficiencies, cash flow issues, and unexpected adjustments at year-end.
How you pay yourself can affect:
• Your personal tax liability
• CPP contributions
• Corporate cash flow
• Long term financial planning
• The balance between salary and dividends
A structured owner compensation strategy can help you take income more consistently and make decisions that align with both your current needs and long term goals.
For incorporated professionals, compensation planning should be part of the bigger tax strategy, not something decided at the last minute.

💸 High sales mean nothing if the cash never reaches your bank account.
You can invoice thousands of dollars and still struggle to pay payroll, rent, or suppliers if customers are slow to pay.
Unpaid invoices can quickly create serious cash flow pressure.
A stronger receivables process can help by using:
• Upfront deposits
• Clear payment terms
• Automated payment reminders
• Consistent follow-ups
• Limits on additional work when accounts are overdue
Revenue looks good on paper. Cash keeps the business running.

🚨 Payroll should never live in your head.
Paying employees is more than sending an e-transfer. Canadian employers also need to manage source deductions, CPP, EI, remittance deadlines, and T4 reporting.
Leaving payroll compliance until tax time can lead to:
• Missed remittances
• CRA penalties and interest
• Incorrect payroll records
• T4 reporting issues
• Unnecessary stress for your business
A proper payroll system helps you stay organized, meet CRA deadlines, and avoid costly mistakes.

🚨 You may not have a sales problem. Your pricing may be the real issue.
Having more clients does not always mean having a more profitable business.
If your prices do not cover your true costs, low margins can make every new sale add more pressure instead of more profit.
Underpricing can lead to:
• Cash flow problems
• Difficulty covering payroll
• Weak profit margins
• Growth that becomes harder to sustain
The goal is not just to sell more. It is to make sure your pricing supports the real cost of running and growing your business.

Salary or dividends? For incorporated business owners, there is no one answer that works for everyone.
Salary can create RRSP contribution room, build CPP pensionable earnings, and is generally deductible to the corporation. Dividends are not subject to CPP and do not create RRSP contribution room.
The best approach depends on your personal income, corporate profits, cash flow needs, and long-term financial goals. In some cases, a combination of salary and dividends may make the most sense.
Are you paying yourself in a way that supports both your current needs and future goals?

Your audit may be costing more than it should and your accounting records could be the reason.
Missing documents, unreconciled accounts, incorrect classifications, weak payroll records, and last-minute adjustments can create more work for auditors. That often means additional questions, longer timelines, and higher professional fees.
A few simple habits can help reduce unnecessary audit work:
- Reconcile your accounts every month
- Keep invoices, receipts, and supporting documents organized
- Review unusual transactions before year-end
- Respond quickly to document requests
Our latest blog explains 10 common accounting mistakes that can increase audit fees and how stronger accounting processes can help your business stay organized, reduce delays, and remain audit-ready throughout the year.
