The September sun sits lower than the July sun. Same window, completely different room.

If your afternoons have turned into squinting at a screen and pulling everything shut, the issue usually is not the amount of glass. It is the fabric in front of it.
Solar shades are woven with a set openness. They cut glare and keep the view, so the yard, the ridge, the trees stay visible while the harshness comes down. Light filtering shades do the opposite trade. They diffuse the light into something soft and even, and they trade the view for privacy.

Most homes we work in use both. Solar in the great room where the view is the point. Light filtering in the bedrooms and the front of the house.

At the start of September the midday sun sits about fourteen degrees lower than it did at the height of summer, and by four in the afternoon it is lower again. Same window. Different angle.

That is why a room that felt right all summer suddenly does not. High summer light enters near the top of the opening and lands close to the glass. Low autumn light enters near the bottom, travels much further in, and arrives at about the height you sit.

Which means the fix is usually the opposite of what people reach for. In July you shade the top of the window. In September you shade the bottom, and the daylight keeps coming in over it. Most people never try that, so when the glare starts they close everything and lose the room instead.

The privacy half works the same way. Sunset moves about ninety minutes earlier across this month, so the lights go on while there is still activity outside, and the part of the window anyone sees through is the lower part. One move handles both.

Walk each room twice before you change anything. Once at four in the afternoon, once at eight in the evening. The two answers usually disagree, and that disagreement is the brief.

Look at the top half of that glass.

That is roughly twenty feet up, and there is no cord, no chain and no wand anywhere on the wall. That is not a styling decision for the photo. It is the only way a shade that size gets used more than once.

Tall windows are the reason motorization exists. They are the best thing about a room like this and the hardest thing to live with, because the light that makes the space is the same light that heats the sofa and washes out the television every afternoon. A ladder solves it once. Nobody solves it twice.

Here the sheers do the softening at eye level and the roller handles the upper storey on its own. Two layers, two jobs, one wall.

If your ceiling is taller than your reach, that is the conversation to have early.

Late August light is the most flattering light of the year in Alberta, and it is also the hardest to live with. Low, long, straight through the west windows at dinner.

Sheer layers keep the glow. Drapery gives the room weight. Motorization means the house adjusts before you do.

A room that handles its own light feels finished in a way furniture never quite delivers.
