Michael Hendricks was a fearless advocate whose courage helped shape a more inclusive, and equitable Canada for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. He was a prominent figure during the AIDS epidemic and a leader in bringing awareness to the stigma that people living with HIV face.

Because of pioneers like Michael, generations have benefited from the rights he fought so hard to advance. His legacy lives on in every person who can live more openly, more safely, and more authentically.

But the work isn't finished. HIV is still here. Stigma is still here. Inequities are still here.

At SafeLink Alberta, we remain committed to carrying that work forward through education, advocacy, and access to compassionate care. Together, we will continue building a future where everyone has the knowledge, support, dignity, and freedom to be themselves.

Our Education team recently hosted the second Building Bridges: Dignity & De-escalation training session at the Medicine Hat Public Library.

The session brought together participants to explore the realities of housing insecurity, trauma, substance use, and stigma through a compassionate, person-centred lens. Through interactive discussions, real-world scenarios, and practical de-escalation techniques, participants gained tools to respond to challenging situations with confidence, empathy, and respect while fostering dignity, safety, and inclusion.
At SafeLink Alberta, we are committed to strengthening communities through education, collaboration, and compassionate, person-centred approaches.

We are grateful for our funding partner, The City of Medicine Hat, for their continued support of our work and thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making this training a meaningful learning experience.
