5 Kings
#downwiththekings
#5KingsYYC 5 Kings aims to push the level of dancing tailored to BBoys and BGirls also known as Breaking better known as Break Dancing.
Historically, competition has played an important part in developing this art form, encouraging creativity, originality, and it's advancement. This all-ages event presents a fun opportunity for dancers to compete in a unified dynamic as a team or crew, pushing the level at which they work together to showcase the skills of the whole crew rather than as an individual. Each team consists of 5 dancers who will battle it out on the dance floor in a timed tournament style format, competing for the big win as the top crew in Western Canada! The event will include special guest judges and DJ whom are well respected within the global Hip Hop dance community and are masters of their craft. This international presence will expose our local Breaking community to the national and international community, entice out of town dancers to come to Calgary, and will urge crews to train hard and give Calgary BBoys and BGirls a platform to perform and compete at a high level.

Born and raised in YYC, Dex got his start in‘97, learning the fundamentals of Breaking, and immersing himself in the movement and musicality that defines the culture. As a member of the Funky Monks crew, he sharpened his skills alongside a tight-knit collective that shared a deep respect for the art form.
That foundation in Breaking — the rhythm, the timing, the innate feel for how music and movement connect — naturally carried over when he stepped behind the decks. In 2007, Dex transitioned into DJing, bringing with him a dancer’s ear and an understanding of the floor that most DJs simply don’t have. For him, the two worlds have always been one
