SmartShield Packaging
Packaging Done Right.
Preventing damage is only one part of the job for aerospace packaging.
The best solutions also help reduce shipping costs, improve handling, extend packaging life, and support more streamlined operations.
In our latest blog, we explore how application-specific packaging delivers far more than protection.
We also share how we helped our client, a leading global provider of aerospace, defense, and industrial technologies - engineer a custom solution for demanding marine environments.

We’ve been getting lots of questions lately about the rising price of corrugated cardboard.
Yes, prices are getting steeper, unfortunately.
But while we can’t control material costs, we can help you make your packaging more efficient with these three Rs:
- Right-size
- Reduce waste
- Review inventory
Swipe through for three ways to make your corrugated packaging work harder.

When our client, a global aerospace and defence tech leader came to us needing packaging for deployment on naval vessels, we knew a standard wooden crate wasn't going to cut it.
This complex project required custom crates, intricate internal supports, specialty coatings, precision-machined inserts, and corrosion-resistant hardware, all designed to perform in demanding marine environments.
Check out how we did it - and if you need our help with a detailed industrial packaging request, give our team a call today.

Meet Nik, One of our talented Custom Packaging Designers here at SmartShield. Nik has been part of the team for a year and a half, and we wouldn’t be without him! Let's get to know him a little better...
💬 What's your favourite aspect of your role?
"The variety of projects I get to work on across different industries. It gives me the opportunity to learn about different industry requirements and develop creative packaging solutions for a wide range of products. I also enjoy seeing our concepts become real products."
💬 What's one project you're particularly proud of?
"It was the Xpert VR project (packaging for an AI system that trains firefighters). It was a bit challenging at first because of the unique requirements, but we worked together to develop a successful solution. It was very rewarding to see the project come together and receive positive feedback from the customer, who was very happy with the final outcome."
💬 Do you have a work nickname?
"Nik! My full name (Nikhil) takes a few tries to get right, so my teammates took the easy route and started calling me Nik. It has become my unofficial office name."
💬 What hobby are you most passionate about outside work?
"I like taking photos and videos and then editing them to create something interesting. It lets me be creative in a different way outside of my design work."
💬 If you could have any superpower for a day, what would it be?
"I'd keep all four seasons in Canada, but cut back on the snow and limit it to just two weeks around Christmas. Then I'd make spring, summer, and fall a little longer. I think most Canadians would be on board with that!"
Thanks for chatting with us, Nik! It's been brilliant having you as part of the SmartShield team over the past year and a half, and we can't wait to see what packaging solutions you help create next.
If you're using off-the-shelf packaging for high-value aerospace and defence components, we hate to say it, but you're taking a risk.
Sensitive electronics, military camera systems and Class A finished surface components all need custom-engineered packaging - designed around your product and how it's handled.
At SmartShield, we engineer packaging that:
• Minimises movement and protects delicate components
• Helps meet clients’ packaging certification requirements and sustainability goals
• Creates a repeatable and efficient packing process, from reusable crates and plastic cases to anti-static foam inserts
Check out this video of Sam from our team talking it through.
Not every wooden crate is ready for international shipping.
Before many crates can cross international borders, the timber must be heat treated to eliminate insects, reduce moisture and meet ISPM 15 export requirements.
As an HT-certified manufacturer, every piece of timber we use is fully traceable, giving our customers confidence that their packaging is ready for export.

The best industrial wood packaging starts with the right questions.
Before we design any packaging solution, our team asks:
✔ Will it protect the product?
✔ Will it be easy to lift?
✔ Can it be unpacked quickly?
✔ Will it protect painted surfaces?
✔ Will it be reused?
✔ Will it make life easier for the customer?
It's these small details that often make the biggest difference. Check out our latest blog to discover the packaging features most people never notice - until they're missing.
