20 years ago today I casually launched a food blog called Under the High Chair (swipe and see if you remember it!) 💻 📷 Social media didn’t exist yet (we hung out on e-Gullet) and I wrote with abandon, confident that no one would read my work.

The intro read: Welcome! I’m Aimee, writer of Under the High Chair, young mama and foodie gourmande. After ten years in the professional cooking industry, I find myself cooking for my pickiest customer yet: my toddler. Since he scorns my efforts, I’ve created this blog as a necessary outlet for my creative cooking juices and to showcase what is ultimately ending up under the high chair.

“Does my one-year-old care that not too long ago, I was cooking for Montreal’s rich and famous, both in their homes as a private chef as well as at one of our city’s top tables? No, he mocks my skill, ignores my attempts to entice him, and does his best to humble me by pitching food on the floor. Since my little client is so hard to please, I’ve created this blog as an outlet for my creative cooking juices.”

Posts included ‘5 Things to Eat Before You Die’, ‘Montreal’s Best Cupcake’, an honest review of the newly opened Joe Beef, many many rants, canning tutorials, a wedding cake here and there and the ups and downs of parenting.

Oh so random.

Only, people WERE reading, and UtHC found an audience of new mothers, home cooks, preserving enthusiasts and experimental bakers. The press and awards rolled, in including a nod from the Canadian Weblog Awards

The first viral post was 2009
“Top Ten Things to Expect when Dining with a Food Blogger”which poked fun at the fact that we dined early for better light, ate cold food and served cake with a slice removed. 🫣

Other huge hits include gingerbread tutorials, Roast Turkey 101 (I believe I was one of the first food bloggers to roast a whole turkey at home and put the step by step process online) and my Canning 101 series.

Looking to get away from it all? My parents are selling their one of a kind home on a private 3.7-acre property on the beautiful British Columbia coast.

Walking distance to the ocean, privacy, established gardens, mature fruit trees, a cozy sleeping cabin for guests and a workshop for that future mancave/she-shed.

Would be a great starter home or second summer home for city dwellers.
