Rain storms are becoming more intense, increasing the risk of basement flooding.

If water is coming from floor drains or basement fixtures, you may be dealing with a sewer backup. Sewer backups can happen when heavy rain overloads the City’s sewer system (sewer surcharge) or when a blocked or damaged sewer lateral prevents wastewater from flowing out.

Stormwater ponds might look calm and inviting, but they’re actually working stormwater facilities — and they’re not safe for recreation.

These ponds are designed to collect rainwater and runoff from nearby roads and other hard surfaces. Water levels can rise quickly during storms and currents beneath the surface can be unpredictable.

🚫 Do not swim, wade, fish, boat or skate on the ponds.
❄️ In winter, ice can be especially dangerous. Ice thickness varies across the pond and continuous water flow, air pockets and road salt can make the ice unstable and unpredictable.

Stormwater ponds are important infrastructure that helps reduce flooding and protect our communities. Help keep yourself, your family and pets safe — stay off and stay away from stormwater ponds.
