From the snow-dusted High Atlas to the Sahara and Morocco’s Atlantic wetlands, our two spring tours delivered some fantastic birding against a spectacular backdrop.

Highlights included Atlas Wheatear and Moussier’s Redstart in the High Atlas; Temminck’s Lark, Red-rumped Wheatear and Pharaoh Eagle-Owl as we travelled south; and Desert Sparrow and a roosting Egyptian Nightjar in the Sahara.

On the Atlantic coast, we enjoyed one of Morocco’s most iconic birds — the Critically Endangered Northern Bald Ibis, for which Morocco remains a vital stronghold.
And there was plenty beyond the birds: ancient kasbahs, bustling souks, dramatic landscapes and delicious Moroccan food.

While our two departures shared many wonderful sightings, each tour also produced a few special surprises of its own.

Our Grand Newfoundland Tour covered many habitats as we crossed the island, including boreal forest, freshwater wetlands, coastal barrens, estuaries, and the highly productive marine environments of the northwest Atlantic. Across these habitats, we recorded 115 bird species, reflecting the province's position at the convergence of Nearctic boreal and North Atlantic avifaunas. Seabird colonies supported exceptional numbers of breeding Atlantic Puffins, Common Murres, Razorbills, Black-legged Kittiwakes, and Northern Gannets, while pelagic waters yielded Great and Sooty Shearwaters and Northern Fulmars. Inland, the extensive boreal forests produced characteristic eastern Canadian species, including Boreal Chickadee, Gray-cheeked Thrush, Blackpoll Warbler, Canada Jay, Pine Grosbeak, and Willow Ptarmigan. Together, these observations highlighted the exceptional ecological diversity and ornithological significance of Newfoundland and Labrador, one of eastern North America's most important regions for breeding seabirds and boreal land birds.

Our Saskatchewan in Spring Tour showcased the province's remarkable diversity. Visiting internationally important shorebird staging areas of Chaplin & Reed Lakes to the sweeping native grasslands of Grasslands National Park & the forested heights of Cypress Hills. Over eight days, the group recorded an impressive 150 bird species, enjoying unforgettable encounters with Sharp-tailed Grouse performing on their lek, Burrowing Owls sharing prairie dog colonies, Great Horned Owl adults with fluffy owlets, Baird's Sparrow, Thick-billed Longspur, Sprague's Pipit, Piping Plover, Clark's Grebe, and spectacular flocks of migrating shorebirds that numbered in the tens of thousands. The tour also produced memorable mammal sightings including Plains Bison, American Badger, Swift Fox, Pronghorn, and Black-tailed Prairie Dog. Combining exceptional birding, dramatic prairie landscapes, and warm Saskatchewan hospitality, the tour highlighted why this region is one of Canada's premier yet under-appreciated birding destinations.

The spring migration tour of Texas was, as always, a huge hit for everyone involved. We began our travels at the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert, traveling up into the very scenic and juniper-clad hills of the Edward’s Plateau, then transferred to the upper Texas coast, to work the migrant trap oak mottes and coastal beaches and salt marshes before finishing up in the Texas Pineywoods north of Houston. This route made for some delightful and diverse birding and we recorded 247 species of birds as a group, with highlights such as Limpkin, Short-tailed Hawk, Ruff, Swainson’s Warbler, Black-capped Vireo, Green Jay & Tropical Parula. 28 Species of warbler was one of our highest in a few years and we were lucky to catch a very good fallout of songbirds on our first day in High Island.
