In 2015, a lynx cub named Nika was weak at Novosibirsk Zoo in Siberia, and her own mother had rejected her. Keepers gave her to a cat that had just had kittens. The cat accepted her, and the lynx cub and the kittens shared the milk.

The zoo says that cat was Muska. Nika grew strong beside her. Within about three months, Nika had outgrown her foster mother, which is a strange sentence to write about a lynx cub and a house cat, and an accurate one.

A year later, keepers turned to Muska again. A litter of newborn dhole pups, Asian wild dogs, needed someone to feed, warm and lick them, and the zoo says she did all three. That made two years running that keepers had looked to the same small cat to raise animals that were not cats.

It is a quietly generous kind of job, one whose success is measured by how soon the young one outgrows you.
