A table can become its own little world.
For a recent private gathering, I created a canapé menu designed for people to linger, talk and return for another bite whenever something caught their attention.
The table brought together balsamic tomatoes with bocconcini and basil, shawarma chicken with charred zucchini, smoked-salmon beet devilled eggs, cucumber cups, cranberry-brie pastries and miniature pavlovas with raspberry curd.
But my favourite part may have been building the landscape around them; moss, flowers, wood, tiny lights and a little bit of woodland whimsy inside an otherwise ordinary room.
Private events give me the opportunity to shape the food and its surroundings around the people gathering there. That care is at the heart of In/Context.
Quiet doesn’t always mean still.
While I haven’t been sharing very much, I’ve been learning how to preserve what is growing around me now so it can become part of an In/Context menu months from now.
Some of these ingredients will appear in winter dishes. Some are experiments for next year. All of them are helping me understand what it means to build menus across seasons, not simply in the days before guests arrive.
At the same time, I’ve been exploring what a more permanent kitchen home for In/Context might look like. Nothing is settled yet, but something is taking shape.
Thank you for being here while I learn, preserve and slowly build what comes next.
The basket is packed. Where you take it is up to you.
Settle beside the water, find a quiet patch of green, or stay close to the farm.
Each Curated Picnic Basket is filled with seasonal food chosen for lingering, sharing and making a meal out of wherever you happen to land.
Available for 2, 4 or 6 people with Friday night pickup or Saturday pick up at Rideau Pines Farm. Order ahead at dineincontext.ca.

A closer look at the food served Under the Pines.
The menu began with what was growing at Rideau Pines Farm, then wandered through smoke, fire, tart summer fruit and a little nostalgia.
Roasted carrots with black currant–cider glaze.
Kohlrabi and apple velouté with fava-leaf oil.
A farm salad of charred corn, patty pan squash, tender greens and pickled cranberries.
Three handmade tacos layered with smoked trout, slow-roasted pork and duck confit.
And toasted-marshmallow ice cream with a red currant ripple to finish.
Rideau Pines Farm was at the heart of the menu and the setting, with beautiful ingredients also supplied by Plot of Earth, Apocalypse Farms and Flowering Creek Farm.
This is the part I love most: allowing the place and the season to shape what arrives at the table.
A picnic table by the locks, a basket made for sharing, and an afternoon with nowhere better to be.
Our seasonal picnic baskets are made for waterside stops, slow wandering, and favourite local places — like the Rideau Locks at Burritts Rapids.

Picnic baskets are taking a little pause this week while I turn my attention to Under the Pines. 🌲
There is still one seat left at the table—so if you’ve been quietly considering joining us, perhaps this is your invitation.
Picnic basket pre-orders will reopen next week after the event. 💜
There is one place left at the table.
On August 14, we’ll gather beneath the pines at Rideau Pines Farm for a seasonal tasting dinner shaped by the farm, the setting, and the people sharing it.
Perhaps the final seat is yours.
