On May 5, 1995, CN had officially opened their new St. Clair River tunnel connecting Sarnia and Port Huron, Michigan. During the weekend of May 6-7 CN held many festivities in Sarnia and Port Huron to commemorate the historic event. CN had operated employee specials for workers across Southern Ontario as well as Michigan so they could attend the events along with their families for “CN Employees Day” on May 6. Also, borrowed GO Transit equipment was utilized on shuttle trains to tour people through the new tunnel to Port Huron and back throughout the weekend. The following day, the general public had the same opportunity to board the GO trains and tour the new tunnel.

VIA Rail had operated the “Employee Day” passenger special across the Guelph Subdivision from Toronto to take CN employees, their families and friends to Sarnia. Upon an invite from a CN employee in Kitchener, Al Wendt and a friend boarded VIA Rail train 609 (CN Employee Special) at Kitchener as well as a few invited local railfans. Powering the train were F40PH-2’s 6410 and 6404. Al documented the train ride from Kitchener to Sarnia over the Guelph and Strathroy Subdivisions with scenes that can no longer be repeated. Upon arrival in Sarnia, those that wanted to travel through the new tunnel boarded the GO Transit equipment for the trip under the river and into Port Huron. Al boarded this train and travelled into Michigan on one of these trips. Upon return, he managed to get into the cab of the GO Transit set and documented his trip back into Canada through the new tunnel. Looking back, likely only in the 90’s could such a ride have occurred. Like always, Al was in the right spot at the right time and we are very thankful decades later.

This is a video filmed from March 26, 1995 to May 11, 1995. The video captures mainline railway action from Southern Ontario on CP’s Galt Subdivision, which runs from Toronto to London, Ontario. During this time, CP had hundreds of units leased from various companies to assist with a motive power shortage. The railway was even leasing several VIA Rail F40PH-2’s, which are seen in the video. Plus, they were still operating many aging MLW’s including RS18u’s, C424’s as well as M-636’s. The previously un-retired big MLW’s were running their last miles before retirement later in the year.

Locations shown on the Galt Subdivision in the video include, Milton, Puslinch, Dumfries, Ayr and Wolverton. One notable clip is the CP Afternoon Galt Job arriving at Ayr and switching the Ayr Pit Spur with a GP7u and two SW1200RS’s including a caboose. This is a video filmed from January 8, 1995 to March 25, 1995. The video captures mainline railway action from around Southern Ontario at famed Bayview Junction in Burlington, Ontario, well as trains on CN’s Dundas Subdivision in the towns of Paris and Copetown. One notable train is a westbound at Paris with a brand new CN Dash 9-44CWL leading, as these units were immediately assigned to western Canada after delivery. Also, many CN trains are seen on the Halton Subdivision at Mansewood, Stewarttown, Georgetown and the junction with the Guelph Subdivision at Silver.

Additionally, several colorful trains are filmed on CP’s Galt Subdivision at Milton, Dumfries, Ayr, Wolverton and Innerkip. This footage was captured by former CN employee, railfan, videographer, photographer and model railroader Al Wendt and is copyrighted and used with permission.

As well, the video continues in Southern Ontario as CN mainline trains are documented in the towns of Paris and Copetown as well as at Bayview Junction and area in Burlington. Plus, several CP Rail and VIA Rail trains are filmed on the Oakville Subdivision around Bayview Junction in Burlington.
