Remember when Electronic Drums first became a thing? Everybody said “Well that’s the end acoustic drums” and maybe…dare I say…the end of drummers? Even the most paranoid of us knew that the technology required to build an electronic drum set sturdy enough to withstand the abuse that the average drummer could subject his kit to on a nightly basis would be years into the future….. but what about that new guy in the band, that guy who dresses funny and can smoke a cigarette while he is playing, in fact, his instrument looks like a table, there’s even a drink holder! Who is that guy? Calls himself a Keyboard player, what’s that? You can make a drum sound on that there thang? Well I’ll be a Sombitch! For all of the fear mongering and bad Drummer jokes…..

What do you call a drummer that breaks up with his girlfriend?

…..Drummers managed to soldier on, what else could they do? And eventually everyone calmed down, burned their disco albums and said “Bring it on!” Today you will find that most drummers still prefer to play acoustic kits but occasionally you come across someone who has decided to embrace the technology, and it’s never been better. For a technology that was supposedly going to render every drummer unemployed and homeless, instead, when we see a drummer playing an electronic kit, it is still somewhat of an oddity. Electronic kits didn’t take over the drum market any more than Electric Guitars replaced Acoustic Guitars, they just gave us more variety, more choice and they’re really cool!

Hey there awesome Indie artists and Friends…

Last night I dreamed I was in a movie called “Full Metal Vinyl” it was about a guy who got a chance to host a show on a Campus/Community Radio Station. The Station Manager was a real hard ass and yelled at the DJ’s all the time, calling them sissies, forcing them to clean the turntables and making them run downstairs to Starbuck's to get him an Herbal Green Tea (Bag in). During training, one of the show hosts got caught eating a jelly donut in the studio, which was strictly forbidden, this led to all of us having to clean and dissipate the static from the entire vinyl library, boy did we let that guy have it...... One night while he was sleeping, the rest of us took our microfiber brushes and beat him senseless. He eventually climbed the radio tower like King Kong and was taken out by the CRTC, Jesus what a fu**ed up mess! Anyhow, the Station Manager used to make the DJ’s recite this speech before going on the air, I thought you might enjoy it…

“This is my Turntable there are many like it but this one is mine. My Turntable is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it, as I have mastered my life. Without me my Turntable is useless. Without my Turntable I am useless. I must spin my Turntable true. I must place the stylus in the dark space between the songs better than Spotify who is trying to kill me. I must cue up the next song before the last song ends. Before the Station Manager I swear this creed. My Turntable and myself are defenders of music. We are the masters of the record library. We are the saviours of vinyl. So be it, until there is no more vinyl…..Amen”

I recently heard of a device that would make our lives easier and more efficient, it would be fun to own and everyone would want one, having one of these would give a great sense of pride and make others envious. This device would make a huge difference in how we manage our daily lives and is so versatile that it could be used in a variety of ways including business, giving the potential to gain huge wealth and profits. This device would be one of the most important purchases that a person would make…….

…..Only problem…… more than one million people would be killed each a year using it……….. would you buy one? Would you buy an automobile?

I look forward to a world of autonomous vehicles. Driving, especially in high volume traffic, is intrinsically ill suited for human control. People make decisions in their own best, self interest; toss in a dash of anonymity and presto!... Maniac Driver!

The other day I heard two people talking about their trip to Toronto and how crazy the traffic was, I chimed in and told them that if all cars were automated, the traffic would be lighter and a whole lot safer. A network of automobiles being shuttled around under the control and power of modern processors constantly evaluating the network and creating route efficiencies and even making predictions by constantly analyzing data…. Would it be perfect? Nothing ever is. Would it be safer? Let’s see…. One computer program producing the best outcome based on an algorithm agreed upon by all? or………One million humans attempting to produce the best outcome for themselves based on one million opinions on who should arrive first at the next red light?
