Science with U of S Professor Alexey: Junior Scientist Series

Four weeks of hands-on science and math discovery for curious kids, Grades 3-5.

This four-week in-person series invites children into the world of real scientific thinking: observing carefully, solving mysteries, finding patterns, testing ideas, and building things with their own hands.

The four one-hour sessions include lively discussions, short videos, do-it-yourself and teamwork challenges, and hands-on projects. Students will take home a small project or science object each week, along with pages for their Junior Scientist Field Notebook.

Week 1: Science Detective Lab

A mystery has been left behind, and the young scientists must follow the evidence. They will use observation, logic, and a real science technique to uncover a hidden answer.

Week 2: Nature’s Secret Code

Nature is full of patterns — some obvious, some hidden. This week, students search for repeating shapes and number patterns that appear in plants, spirals, and the natural world.

Week 3: Shapes That Build Themselves

Can a shape appear even when nobody draws it? Students explore surprising geometry through hands-on building and experimenting, discovering that nature often chooses the most efficient design.

Week 4: Can You Trust Your Eyes?

Our eyes are amazing, but they do not always tell the whole truth. Students investigate vision, perception, and light through simple tests and take-home surprises they can try on the whole family.

Every week begins with a question or mystery and ends with something the children have made, tested, or uncovered themselves.

The goal is not just to learn facts, but to spark curiosity:
“How do we know?” “What will happen if…?” “Can I test it myself?”

All materials are provided.
