A study published this year surveyed nearly a thousand adults and found something a lot of dog owners already knew instinctively, losing a dog can trigger grief every bit as intense and long lasting as losing a human family member. One in five people who'd lost a pet said it was the most distressing loss they'd ever experienced, more than losing a parent, sibling, or close friend for some. About 7.5 percent met the clinical criteria for prolonged grief disorder, a rate similar to what's seen after losing a spouse or a sibling.

What makes this land is how unsurprising it feels once you actually sit with it. A dog is woven into the smallest parts of daily life, greeting you at the door, sleeping beside you, following you room to room for no reason except wanting to be near you. When that's gone, the quiet left behind isn't small, it's the sound of a house that used to have footsteps in it and doesn't anymore. Researchers are now pushing for pet loss to be formally recognized in grief diagnostic guidelines, arguing the current gap leaves people feeling dismissed for a pain that's completely real.
