If bedtime has suddenly become a struggle, the last nap of the day might be the first thing to look at. 👀

A nap that ends too late can leave your baby or toddler without enough awake time before bed which can show up as taking forever to fall asleep, early morning rising, playing or rolling around in the crib, bedtime protests or night wakes.

When should the last nap end? ⬇️

➡️ 4–5 months: 5:00–6:00 PM
➡️ 6 months (on 3 naps): 5:00 PM
➡️ 6 months (on 2 naps): 4:00 PM
➡️ 7–13 months: 4:00 PM
➡️ 14–17 months: 3:00 PM
➡️ 18 months–2.5 years: 2:00–2:30 PM

A few important things:

These are guidelines, not hard rules.

Your child’s sleep needs, nap length, wake time, bedtime and current nap schedule all matter.

If bedtime is going well? You don’t need to change something just because a chart says so.

But if bedtime has recently gotten harder, your child is taking much longer to fall asleep, or bedtime keeps creeping later and later, take a look at when that final nap is ending.

Sometimes a small adjustment is all that’s needed.
