Fine artist and Illustrator from the magical lands of Venezuela... / Artista plástico e ilustrador de las tierras mágicas de Venezuela...

Diego de la Rosa is a fine artist born in Venezuela that is currently living and working in Toronto. His work explores the cultural impact of urban crime in his native country, and relies on symbolism to explore the ideas and sentiments born from this reality. His process involves the collection of found imagery of people and places from Venezuela that are then rearranged into painted narratives full of imaginative elements, such as giants, theatrical atmosphere, and fantastical characters. The source imagery represents the perceived reality, while the painting tactics embody the values and ideas that are employed to create a reading for these circumstances. The use of allegory in his paintings provides an artistic translation of social concepts similar to the interpretative approach of an anthropological study. He uses these painted scenarios to illustrate both the cultural notions surrounding crime, and critical theories on frustration, resilience, spatial inhibition and the desire for power, which he employs to analyze the subject at hand. Through his work, De la Rosa creates images that universalize issues of oppression, crime and social struggle, evoking empathy in societies so distant from his own.

Thank you to everyone who came last night to celebrate the opening of The Wanderers at the The University Club of Toronto . I am still blown away from such a beautiful reception🥂🌴

It still feels a little surreal to think that the show is finally here. The Wanderers is a very new body of work for me, and in many ways it marks a new direction in my practice: to explore my own identity as a migrant through the visual language I’ve been developing over the years.

After spending so much time alone with these paintings in the studio, seeing so many friends, family, familiar faces, and new audiences come together to experience them meant more to me than I can really put into words (but I will still try!).

A few special shoutouts:

To my family and friends, thank you for always being there for me, for believing in what I do, and for supporting me through every stage of this journey.

To Katlin Rogers (Rogers Art Advisory ), for inviting me to be part of this, for helping me bring the exhibition together, and most importantly, for trusting my vision and giving this body of work a space to exist.

And finally, to my wife, Antonieta. So much of what I do would simply not be possible without you. This moment also belongs to you.

I will carry this night with me for a long time. Thank you✨🌙

Pacheco in Toronto, 2026
Oil and acrylic on canvas
30 × 40 inches

When the weather turns cold in Venezuela, people say, “Pacheco has arrived.” The expression recalls the story of a man who descends from the mountains carrying flowers, bringing the cold with him.

In Pacheco in Toronto, this story enters the world of The Wanderers. A giant Pacheco descends upon the landscape as night falls, drawing its warmth into himself. Beneath him, Toronto and Caracas merge: snow-covered pines stand beside tropical palms, while the CN Tower rises beyond mountainous terrain recalling Caracas.

Two Venezuelan llaneros travel through this strange landscape on horseback, carrying fruit for delivery. Like Pacheco, they bring the customs and memories of their place of origin into a climate where they seemingly do not belong.

The painting transforms the arrival of the Canadian winter into a Venezuelan myth, imagining how stories, traditions, and memories travel with us and become part of the new landscapes we learn to inhabit.

What is behind a hug? A mere emotion? A story? A journey? A moment of reconnecting?

This is one of the ideas I will explore in my upcoming show “The Wanderers”, opening on September 16th at the The University Club of Toronto

🍁 Maple Mangoes 🥭
Oil and acrylic on panel
6 × 7 inches
2026
Proud to announce that Maple Mangoes has been selected for this year’s ARTATTACK!, the annual art auction and fundraiser for Buddies in Bad Times Theatre in Toronto Buddies in Bad Times Theatre
****
Maple Mangoes reflects on the convergence of cultures and worlds that takes place within the migrant experience. Here, the mangoes of Venezuela merge with the maple of Canada, becoming something that belongs fully to neither, but carries something of both. The painting asks what happens when two worlds take root within us—what is preserved, what is transformed, and what new identities might emerge in between.

UPCOMING SHOW
—
I am pleased to announce my upcoming solo exhibition: “The Wanderers” - a multi sized collection of paintings that will be presented at the main hall of The University Club of Toronto (The University Club of Toronto ) from September 15th till November 2nd.
Through surreal, symbolic paintings inspired by the Venezuelan diaspora, “The Wanderers” reflects on the emotional journey of migration—where memory, identity, and belonging are continuously reshaped. Through a series of symbolic narratives, the paintings depict Venezuelan migrants inhabiting a surreal world where the architecture, fauna, and ecosystems of Venezuela and Canada merge to create confusion and wonder.
Please join us for an opening reception on Wednesday, September 16th. The event will feature a special performance by La Pantera Curandera (lapanteracurandera )
Curated by Katlin Rogers of Rogers Art Advisory
