59 years ago today, September 9, 1967, Spider-Man premiered on ABC.

Based on the Marvel Comics superhero created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the animated series ran until June 14, 1970, producing 52 episodes over three seasons.

The first season was produced by Grantray-Lawrence Animation, but after the studio ran into financial difficulties, animator Ralph Bakshi took over production for later seasons. Working with extremely limited budgets, Bakshi introduced a more stylized visual approach, darker settings, and heavy use of atmospheric background music, with some episodes relying on recycled animation and stock footage to cut costs.

The series is perhaps best remembered today for its theme song, "Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can," which remains one of the most recognizable television themes ever recorded. Spider-Man was voiced by Paul Soles.
