ACORN Canada
ACORN Canada is an independent national organization of low and moderate income families
From Sept 3-10th, ACORN members and allies took action across Canada.
From Halifax to Vancouver, ACORN members and allies delivered a letter signed by more than 17 tenant organizations demanding a real voice in the next National Housing Strategy. Tenants bear the worst consequences of Canada’s housing crisis, especially low-income, disabled, racialized and other marginalized communities. We will not accept another housing strategy written around the demands of landlords, developers and private equity.
The letters have been delivered. Help us get a response.
Sign the national petition and tell the federal government: tenants need a seat at the table.

Rounding out today's letter drops with visits to MP offices in Hamilton, London, Calgary and Brampton!
Remember that all of Carney's cabinet is homeowners. 38% are landlords. We can't expect them to represent our interests - tenants MUST be heard!!
More MP letter drops on the National Housing Strategy 2.0 are happening next week in Quebec and on the East coast! More to come.

NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US! Tenant groups are demanding the federal govt bring tenants to the table as they develop the National Housing Strategy 2.0.
1/3 of Canadians rent. Renters are experiencing the worst outcomes of the housing crisis. Tenants deserve a seat at the table.
This morning's MP letter drops in Toronto, Ottawa, Sudbury and London had mixed responses from accepting our letter to calling the cops.
More letter drops happening across the country this afternoon - stay tuned ✊️

A "business as usual" approach to housing isn't going to cut it. Since the last National Housing Strategy in 2017:
-Average rents across Canada have increased by 46%
-Since 2020, homelessness across Canada has increased by 79%
-Between 2016 and 2021, Canada lost 230,000 affordable rental units - that’s 46,000 units every single year!
The government has spent enough time consulting the developers who got us into this mess. It's time for change - tell PM Mark Carney to consult with tenants!

The Federal government is currently developing a NEW National Housing Strategy🏠. This is a real opportunity for Canada to reverse course on many of the issues plaguing renters who are bearing the brunt of the housing crisis.
Yet consultations on the new NHS are being done in secret and behind closed doors 🚪🔒.
Every Minister in the Liberal Cabinet is a homeowner and 38% are landlords. How can we expect the federal government to represent tenants’ interests if we’re not consulted? 🤔

📻 ACORN Radio 📻 -> Maritimes and Beyond hosted by NB ACORN's Nichola Taylor LISTEN ->-> https://bit.ly/4ghrcqa
This week Nichola talks with Dave Longchamps from Ottawa ACORN about Ottawa's Rental Renovation License Bylaw.
Ferguslea Properties wants to tear down 1,000 family townhomes in Accora Village 🚨 That’s 5X bigger than the Herongate demovictions that made international news in 2018. City Hall could protect tenants, but isn't. 👇
For over a decade, Ottawa ACORN has called on to pass a rental replacement bylaw that would ensure demolished affordable homes are replaced in the new development, and that impacted tenants are provided temporary housing until construction is complete and they can return to their homes at the same rent 🏠🔑
This isn't new. Half a dozen Ontario municipalities already have these protections in place. Now 's inaction puts thousands of low-income and working class families at risk of mass displacement while destroying much needed affordable, family rentals ⚠️
We need federal leadership when cities refuse to act! 📢
Earlier this year the Carney government announced federal funding to build 1,100 new rental homes in Ottawa... roughly the size of what will be demolished in Accora Village 👎
Canada's approach to housing is backwards if our strategy is to incentive the construction of new housing on one hand, while allowing corporate landlords to destroy what already exists on the other 📉
So what's the solution? 🤔 We need national housing standards that set a baseline of tenant protections - CANADA WIDE!
That means if cities, provinces and territories want federal money, they'll need to strengthen their policies protecting renters ie. no more 💰💰 for enabling the destruction of our homes! ✊🔥
Tell Mark Carney we need his government to stand up for renters!
Send the feds a short email, post on social media, call your MP, or flyer your building - there are so many ways to take action! 🔗Check out the link in the first comment to learn more.

Make it make sense. 😠
Every year, Canada loses 46,000 affordable rental units due to weak rent control laws and poor tenant protections from no-fault evictions.
Worse perhaps is that federal housing money is going to projects that are literally destroying affordable housing! 💣Mark Carney 's latest announcement is giving $1.8 BILLION💰 to Toronto developers - some of which is going to a redevelopment project by Menkes Developments.
Menkes is a real estate company that plans to demolish the affordable rent controlled homes of hundreds of tenants at 55 Brownlow, including Megan Kee from No Demovictions . What will replace these homes? Condos🏢.
Add your name to ACORN's online action to send Prime Minister Carney, Housing Minister Gregor Robertson and your MP a message: the federal government MUST put affordability and anti-eviction conditions on federal funding to protect our homes! 👇
