Here's a quick tour of a home that proves you do not have to knock down every wall to make a main floor flow better. We’ll start in the kitchen, opened up around that generous dry island. From there, the dining area gets its own identity, with a built-in banquette instead of a formal dining setup.
Around the corner? A moody burgundy powder room that feels like a complete little departure from everything you’ve seen so far. Then back into the bright entry, where we managed to tuck that powder room into the existing foyer.
Our client is sensitive to noise, so connection without completely open concept was actually the goal here.

A few more from Italy because there were just too many good details not to share. The stone, the old doors, the gardens, the pizza… all of it.
xx,

Designing a kid’s room that they’ll still love when they’re suddenly WAY too cool for everything is quite the assignment. That was a big part of our thinking at Chiltern Hill.
We wanted this bedroom to feel special and playful now, without designing something our client would need to completely redo a few years later. So instead of leaning into anything overly juvenile, we built the personality through texture and colour: dusty coral, soft grey, warm wood, hits of black and lots of tactile layers. It still has that little bit of fun a kid’s room should have, but it has plenty of growing room built in too.

A renovation budget shouldn’t start with “what can we afford?” and end there. The better question is: what do we actually want this renovation to change about how we live?
Maybe hosting is a huge part of your life. Maybe storage is driving you insane. Maybe you’d happily invest more in the kitchen but couldn’t care less about fancy finishes elsewhere.
That context matters when deciding where your money goes.
It’s one of the things we unpack in our free Planning Your Home Renovation guide, alongside defining your scope, deciding where to splurge and understanding who you’ll need on your team.

Tiny design hill we’ll happily die on: your entryway shouldn’t make you sidestep furniture the second you come home.
We wanted Cedarvale to have that open, light California feeling our clients loved, so keeping the arrival experience visually calm mattered too. Instead of filling the middle of the space, we worked the function into the perimeter: streamlined floor-to-ceiling storage at the end, a slim bench along the wall, and a narrow console that gives you that very necessary little landing spot without eating into circulation.

Can we talk about the fact that “open concept” does not have to mean seeing the entire house from the second you open the front door?
At High Park, the kitchen needed to be central because flow was incredibly important to this family of five. But we also wanted the main floor to have some mystery to it. So rather than revealing the kitchen, dining and living spaces immediately from the foyer, we designed the dining room bar to partially veil what’s beyond.
You get little glimpses. But you have to move further into the house for the rooms to reveal themselves. It’s such a small distinction, but it’s one of those things that makes an open-plan home feel defined rather than just… open.

One of the trickiest parts of renovating a Queen Anne home? You want the benefits of a modern floor plan WITHOUT losing all the things that made you fall for an old house in the first place.
At Durand, we reworked the main floor to open up the rooms and pull more natural light in, while being really intentional about preserving its sense of history and place.
Then came the fun part: making the living room feel like their home rather than a history lesson. That meant a collected mix of old-meets-new energy, sculptural furniture, warm leather, softer textures and lighting with a little personality.

A little glimpse of Italy through Carrie’s eyes this summer. Beautiful streets, beautiful details, and of course, plenty of espresso.

Pool day, friends over, food on the island, someone making drinks, kids wandering in hungry… this was the kind of real life we were designing around at Cedarvale.
Our clients wanted a bright, open main floor with that relaxed California feeling, but “open” alone wasn’t enough. It needed to make entertaining genuinely easier.
That’s why this dining area became such an important piece of the kitchen. The built-in banquette gives a crowd somewhere to gather without carving out a completely separate formal dining room, and keeps everyone connected to what’s happening in the kitchen.
