To help guide method selection in practice, this study compared three approaches using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with a 100 m grid: observation nudging (NDG), temporal correction (TC), and the directional extrapolation method (DE). WRF simulations without on-site measurement data and direct application of onshore measurements were also evaluated as reference methods, using measurement data from four nearshore sites in Japan.

TC, which corrects simulated winds using wind vector errors at the reference point at each time step, achieved the lowest mean wind speed bias and the smallest standard deviation of bias across the evaluated cases. It also better reproduced horizontal wind speed differences between reference and target points. NDG improved the reproduction of temporal variations compared with the uncorrected WRF simulation, while DE had limitations in reproducing temporal variations in horizontal wind speed differences. These findings support the use of TC for practical nearshore wind resource assessment.

Wind Estimation Methods for Nearshore Wind Resource Assessment Using High-Resolution WRF and Coastal Onshore Measurements Accurate wind resource assessment is essential for offshore wind energy development, particularly in nearshore sites where atmospheric stability and internal boundary layers significantly influence the horizontal wind distribution. In this study, we investigated wind estimation methods using a high-...

Development in Surrogate-Based Polynomial Chaos with Adaptive Sobol Sensitivity Analysis for Uncertainty Quantification and Offshore 15 MW Wind Turbine Performance Prediction: Comparative, Icing, and Wind Farm Optimization Studies Accurate performance prediction for large offshore wind turbines requires a principled treatment of uncertainty in both the wind resource and the rotor design parameters. In the present work, we develop a surrogate-based, multi-level uncertainty quantification (UQ) framework coupling a physics-based...
