📸 What does a jewel look like when two of the world's greatest craft traditions decide to speak to each other?
Van Cleef & Arpels' Lacquered Butterfly clips have answered that question every year since 2004. Each piece begins in Paris — crafted in yellow and white gold, set with diamonds, fitted with luminous white mother-of-pearl wings. Then it travels to Wajima City, Japan, where master lacquer artist Junichi Hakose transforms those wings into miniature canvases using urushi lacquer, maki-e gold-powder sprinkle, raden mother-of-pearl inlay, and rankaku crushed eggshell — techniques refined across centuries.
The latest expressions draw from the Tsuzumi drum, the elegant hourglass instrument of Noh and Kabuki theatre, and the bright, joyful spirit of traditional Japanese folk toys. The result: butterflies that carry both the geometry of the drum and the warmth of mingei culture in their wings.
Every piece is entirely unique — a one-of-a-kind creation that cannot be replicated, even by the same hand.

The TRIPLE SPLIT in 950 platinum with a silver-coloured dial, limited to 100 pieces, and the 1815 UP/DOWN in 750 pink and white gold, each limited to 300 pieces, were unveiled for the first time. As Lange CEO Wilhelm Schmid noted, tradition, craftsmanship, and timeless design unite both worlds — classic cars and mechanical timepieces.
