EPDA CREATING SAFER SPACES FOR CHILDREN

Through our WASH interventions in schools, Child-Friendly Spaces (CFS) and Temporary Learning Spaces (TLSs) across the South West Region of Cameroon, EPDA, with the support of UNICEF and ECHO, continues to improve sanitation facilities and promote better hygiene practices for children in communities.
A clean, safe and dignified toilet is more than a facility it is essential to health, safety, dignity and a child’s right to learn in a healthy environment.
These before-and-after images tell a simple but powerful story, when we invest in WASH, we invest in healthier, safer and more dignified learning environments for children.

From Healing to Action: Limbe Stakeholders Commit to Stronger Community Resilience After August Floods
Limbe grieved following the devastating 5 August 2026 floods in Limbe and a passionate respond evolved into collective action to strengthen preparedness, prevention, response and recovery.
On 25 August 2026, Dr. Esther Omam Njomo - International Development Expert, Global Peace Champion, Peacebuilder and Mediator, convened a community dialogue at the Limbe I Council Conference Hall under the She Builds Peace Campaign, bringing together affected families, local authorities, traditional and religious leaders, humanitarian and development actors, civil society, women peacebuilders, private-sector representatives, community leaders and the media.
Held under the theme “From Healing to Action: Building Local Solutions for Community Peace and Resilience,” the dialogue created space for affected families to share experiences of loss, displacement and recovery through Healing Circles, while stakeholders explored practical pathways from recovery to resilience.
Key priorities included community preparedness and early warning, disaster risk awareness and prevention, community-authority communication, women and youth engagement, countering misinformation, community solidarity, and stronger coordination among Councils, communities, humanitarian actors, civil society and the private sector.
A significant outcome was the development and signing of locally owned disaster resilience commitments, creating a foundation for accountability and follow-up rather than leaving recommendations without clear ownership.
EPDA: Partnering for Locally Led Resilience
As a community-based organization working across environmental protection, climate resilience, agriculture and food security, WASH and humanitarian response, EPDA is committed to strengthening partnerships that connect community knowledge with climate adaptation, environmental risk reduction, neighbourhood early warning systems, WASH preparedness, anticipatory action and local governance.
The next priority is translating commitments into action through stronger coordination, community engagement and practical risk-reduction initiatives.
EPDA welcomes partnerships with local authorities, humanitarian and development organizations, climate and environmental actors, research institutions, private-sector partners and donors committed to investing in community-led disaster preparedness and resilient communities in Limbe and vulnerable communities across Cameroon.
Healing must lead to action. Preparedness must precede disaster. Resilience must be built with communities and not for them.

FROM ECHO PHASE 2 TO ECHO PHASE 3: STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIPS, LEARNING AND COMMUNITY-CENTRED HUMANITARIAN ACTION IN CAMEROON’S NORTH-WEST AND SOUTH-WEST REGIONS
27–28 August 2026
UNICEF, in collaboration with the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), brought together key humanitarian partners and stakeholders from Cameroon’s North-West and South-West Regions to reflect on achievements, share lessons learned and innovations from ECHO-supported Phase 2 interventions, and collectively explore priorities and strategies for Phase 3.
As one of UNICEF’s WASH partners, EPDA was honoured to contribute to the panel discussion, sharing practical experiences from its community-based WASH interventions on how complaints and feedback mechanisms, safe reporting channels, and meaningful community engagement can help translate community voices into responsive, accountable and locally relevant humanitarian action.
For EPDA, the discussions reinforced a principle that continues to guide our work:
Communities are not simply recipients of humanitarian assistance. They are partners, decision-makers and owners of solutions.
When communities are meaningfully engaged—and when their feedback informs programme design, implementation and adaptation—humanitarian interventions become more relevant, inclusive, accountable and impactful.
The two-day event also featured an interactive exhibition, creating an important platform for humanitarian and development actors to showcase programmes, innovations, lessons learned and community impact.
For EPDA, the exhibition provided an opportunity to showcase our work in WASH and other community-based interventions, share experiences, learn from fellow practitioners, and explore opportunities for stronger collaboration and partnership.
Most importantly, the event created space to connect with humanitarian organisations, development partners, government stakeholders, UN actors and other institutions committed to addressing the complex challenges facing vulnerable communities in the North-West and South-West Regions.
These connections matter. Addressing protracted humanitarian challenges requires more than individual projects. It calls for strategic partnerships, locally led approaches, cross-sectoral collaboration, knowledge exchange, innovation and collective action.
As EPDA looks towards the next phase of humanitarian programming, we remain committed to strengthening partnerships that move beyond project implementation towards:
🔹 Collective learning and knowledge sharing
🔹 Cross-sectoral collaboration and integrated programming
🔹 Locally led and community-owned solutions
🔹 Accountability to affected people
🔹 Innovation and evidence-informed action
🔹 Stronger linkages between humanitarian response, development and resilience
🔹 Long-term community resilience and sustainable impact
We welcome opportunities to connect, collaborate and co-create solutions with organisations, institutions, donors, government partners and other actors working to improve access to WASH, education, protection food security, climate change, environmental education, natural resources management and essential services for vulnerable communities.
Together, we can strengthen humanitarian action by ensuring that children, families and communities are not only at the centre of our interventions—but are active partners in shaping the solutions that affect their lives.

Today, the EPDA team successfully carried out a Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) sensitization campaign in the Bonadikombo community in Limbe, bringing together women, men, adolescent girls and boys, and young children to raise awareness on the importance of preventing and reporting all forms of sexual exploitation and abuse.
The campaign focused on promoting safe behaviors, encouraging community members to speak up, strengthening reporting mechanisms, and emphasizing that everyone has a role to play in protecting vulnerable individuals.
Through interactive discussions and awareness activities, the campaign reached 150 community members, empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to prevent, report, investigate, refer, and take action against cases of sexual exploitation and abuse.
At EPDA, we believe that creating safer communities begins with awareness, education, and collective action.
Together, we can build a community where everyone is protected, respected, and heard.
