Just two days after our concert at Gabriel Loci, Klang Systematiek will make its Cyprus debut, opening the 17th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival.

Founded by clarinettist Gareth Davis, Ensemble Klang Systematiek brings together leading musicians from across the continent with backgrounds spanning contemporary classical, electronic, improvised, and experimental music. Members are drawn from ensembles, bands and collectives including Klangforum Wien, Musikfabrik, Motorpsycho, Raster-Noton, and the ICP, creating a meeting point for distinct musical traditions and perspectives.

Seeking to transform the soundscape and erase the boundaries between composition and performance, Klang Systematiek will make its Cyprus debut opening the 17th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival, on Friday 2 October at The Shoe Factory in Nicosia, with an immersive programme of world premieres by Stavros Choplaros, Arturo Corrales and Barbara Monk Feldman, and Cyprus premieres by Kaija Saariaho, Oscar Bianchi, Jürg Frey and George Christofi.

Klang Systematiek is a European-wide contemporary music ensemble based in Prague. Founded by artistic director and bass clarinettist Gareth Davis, the group brings together leading musicians from across the continent with backgrounds spanning contemporary classical, electronic, improvised, and experimental music. Members are drawn from ensembles, bands and collectives including Klangforum Wien, Musikfabrik, Motorpsycho, Raster-Noton, and the ICP, creating a meeting point for distinct musical traditions and perspectives.

The ensemble was born through a shared exploration of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Aus den Sieben Tagen, a project that laid the foundation for Klang Systematiek’s artistic ethos: to reimagine canonical works of experimental music as living, open systems. By combining performers from diverse practices and generations, the group seeks to dissolve the boundaries between notation and intuition, composition and improvisation, performance and installation.

Klang Systematiek’s productions often reframe performance as an immersive, communal experience. Concerts focus on physical spaces, often avoiding traditional staging, use responsive live lighting, and engage with the audiences allowing them to be free to move or lie among the performers. These environments invite listening as a shared act of presence rather than a passive observation. The ensemble’s instrumentation and staging are fluid, adapting to each project to uncover new resonances between space, sound, and perception.

Klang’s programming reflects its wide-ranging curiosity. Events have included installation performances of Stockhausen, William Basinski, and La Monte Young; retrospectives of James Tenney and Pauline Oliveros; new works by Annea Lockwood and Bernhard Lang; collaborations with Christian Marclay and Peter Greenaway; and profiles dedicated to John Cage, Luigi Nono, and Gavin Bryars. Through these projects, Klang Systematiek explores how experimental and minimalist traditions can continue to evolve, reaching audiences new to this repertoire and revealing the enduring vitality of music as a social, spatial, and transformative experience.

Έχοντας ιδρυθεί από τον μπάσο κλαρινετίστα Gareth Davis (Γκάρεθ Ντέιβις), ο οποίος διατελεί και καλλιτεχνικός διευθυντής του συνόλου, το Ensemble Klang Systematiek έχει ως έδρα του την Πράγα και δραστηριοποιείται πανευρωπαϊκά. Το σύνολο φέρνει κοντά κορυφαίους μουσικούς από διάφορες χώρες, των οποίων οι καταβολές εκτείνονται από τη σύγχρονη κλασική μουσική έως την ηλεκτρονική, αυτοσχεδιαστική και πειραματική μουσική. Τα μέλη του Klang Systematiek προέρχονται από σύνολα, συγκροτήματα και καλλιτεχνικές κολεκτίβες όπως Klangforum Wien, Musikfabrik, Motorpsycho, Raster-Noton και ICP, δημιουργώντας έτσι ένα σημείο συνάντησης διαφορετικών μουσικών παραδόσεων και προσεγγίσεων.

Το σύνολο γεννήθηκε μέσα από μια κοινή εξερεύνηση του έργου Aus den Sieben Tagen του Καρλχάιντς Στοκχάουζεν, ένα εγχείρημα που έθεσε τις βάσεις για το καλλιτεχνικό όραμα του Klang Systematiek: την επαναπροσέγγιση εμβληματικών έργων της πειραματικής μουσικής ως ζωντανά, ανοικτά συστήματα. Συνδυάζοντας ερμηνευτές διαφορετικών γενιών, από ποικίλα πεδία πρακτικής, το σύνολο επιδιώκει να αμβλύνει τα όρια μεταξύ μουσικής σημειογραφίας και διαίσθησης, σύνθεσης και αυτοσχεδιασμού, εκτέλεσης και εγκατάστασης.

Οι παραγωγές του Klang Systematiek συχνά επαναπροσδιορίζουν τη μουσική εκτέλεση ως μια βιωματική, συλλογική εμπειρία. Οι συναυλίες επικεντρώνονται σε φυσικούς χώρους, αποφεύγοντας συχνά την παραδοσιακή σκηνική διάταξη, ενώ χρησιμοποιούν ζωντανό φωτισμό που ανταποκρίνεται στη μουσική και ενθαρρύνουν την αλληλεπίδραση με το κοινό, επιτρέποντάς του να κινείται ελεύθερα ή ακόμη και να ξαπλώνει ανάμεσα στους μουσικούς. Τα περιβάλλοντα αυτά μετατρέπουν την ακρόαση σε μια συλλογική βιωματική εμπειρία και όχι σε παθητική παρατήρηση. Η ενορχήστρωση και η σκηνική διάταξη του συνόλου είναι ευέλικτες και προσαρμόζονται σε κάθε έργο, αναζητώντας νέες σχέσεις ανάμεσα στον χώρο, τον ήχο και την αντίληψη.

Ο προγραμματισμός του Klang αντικατοπτρίζει το ευρύ φάσμα των καλλιτεχνικών του αναζητήσεων. Τα πρότζεκτ του περιλαμβάνουν παραστάσεις-εγκαταστάσεις έργων των Στοκχάουζεν, Γουίλιαμ Μπασίνσκι και Λα Μόντε Γιανγκ, αναδρομικά αφιερώματα στους Τζέιμς Τένι και Πολίν Ολιβέρος, νέα έργα των Ανέα Λόκγουντ και Μπέρνχαρντ Λανγκ, συνεργασίες με τους Κρίστιαν Μάρκλεϊ και Πίτερ Γκρίναγουεϊ, καθώς και αφιερώματα στους Τζον Κέιτζ, Λουίτζι Νόνο και Γκάβιν Μπράιαρς. Μέσα από αυτά τα εγχειρήματα, το Klang Systematiek διερευνά πώς οι παραδόσεις της πειραματικής και μινιμαλιστικής μουσικής μπορούν να συνεχίσουν να εξελίσσονται, προσεγγίζοντας ακροατές που έρχονται για πρώτη φορά σε επαφή με αυτό το ρεπερτόριο, και αναδεικνύοντας τη διαχρονική ζωτικότητα της μουσικής ως κοινωνικής, χωρικής και μεταμορφωτικής εμπειρίας.

🍂 This autumn, Klang Systematiek returns to Prague with three programmes built around three simple questions:
What is ...... A Score? • ... An Instrument? • ... A Concert?

Three evenings moving between composed music, electronics, image, performance and sound. Three different spaces. Three different ways of encountering music — sometimes through a score, sometimes through the physicality of an instrument, sometimes by questioning the concert itself.
