Morten Paustian’s story

When I was in kindergarten, I kept to myself most of the time. At one point, it was suggested that maybe the reason I was spending so much time alone was because I had a hard time following what was going on around me.

It turned out I had a hearing loss of 40 dB. I was 4 years old at the time. Now, it is down to almost 90 dB, gradually getting worse. At a loss of 120 dB comes complete deafness. I can’t remember a time without hearing loss, which also means that I can’t remember a time without wearing a hearing aid. There was never an alternative, really.

Many years later, I became an architect. My parents had always had a lot of architect friends. Growing up, I thought they were cool and funny. They always had nice-looking wives, too. When in architecture school, I was drawing a lot. I found great joy in it, and I was good at it, too. I’m convinced it had something to do with my hearing.

Even though a hearing aid had enabled me to function and thrive in society, I was still very much inside my own fantasy world. I could disappear into it, and there, I didn’t need anybody else. I don’t go around thinking about the fact that I wear a hearing aid. I think of myself as a normal human being. But then, sometimes, the realization arrives: Morten, you have a pretty severe handicap. When I go to bed in the evening, I take out my hearing aid. And then there’s nothing, just silence. Complete silence.

Johanna Højland’s story

When I was around 19, I took a gap-year job at a restaurant, and that’s when I really started noticing it. I couldn’t hear the bell in the kitchen, I had trouble hearing what my colleagues said when it got noisy, I struggled to hear what the guests were saying.

It hit me: Things that other people could easily hear, I could not. It would often seem like I was ignoring people, but I simply didn’t hear them.

That’s when I went to the doctor. They discovered that I have a lot of scar tissue in my right ear from multiple eardrum ruptures as a child, caused by middle-ear infections.

It had never really been a problem. I would just sit at the front of the classroom so I could hear the teacher better. I remember sometimes zoning out or daydreaming and missing parts of what was said. It was often described as a concentration issue. I wasn’t super-thrilled when I heard the word ‘hearing aid’. It was great to finally get help, sure, but I immediately thought of my grandparents.

I didn’t know any other 19-year-olds with a hearing aid. It felt strange and lonely—though also a bit exciting. Without my hearing aid, I tend to shut the world out. When I wear it, everything opens up. I can follow conversations at a table, hear people several seats away. It’s a huge improvement in quality of life, really.

Bjørn Valentin’s story.

Seven years ago, I was living in a small studio apartment. Two meters from my bed stood my refrigerator. It was quite a sh*tty one. I even complained to the landlord.

The problem was it could get really noisy. At other times, it could fall completely silent. I thought there was something wrong with it.

But then one night, lying on my one side, I realized I could hear the refrigerator just fine, and then, when turning sides, I couldn’t hear it at all.

That’s when it clicked.

I went to the doctor and had all sorts of hearing tests done. They could see that there I had a quite significant hearing loss in my right ear. Hearing is kind of strange that way, because it changes gradually, and you start compensating without noticing it. After it was diagnosed, I suddenly could hear the huge difference when I covered one ear.

I work as an actor, and if I go to see a play where I know it’s done without microphones, I always bring my hearing aid. Otherwise, I’m one big question mark.
