I fully agree. Much like engineering, fire safety is often only considered after an incident, a near miss, or when regulations require it. The most effective fire prevention measures are those implemented before a fire ever starts.

Engineers design structures to withstand disasters; fire prevention professionals help ensure those structures protect lives from fire hazards. Smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and fire risk assessments should be viewed as necessities, not luxuries.

Across the Caribbean, where hurricanes, electrical faults, and other hazards can quickly turn into emergencies, investing in professional guidance from both engineers and fire safety experts is one of the smartest decisions homeowners and business owners can make.

Prevention is always less costly than recovery. Building safer communities begins with planning, compliance, and a commitment to protecting lives and property before disaster strikes.

Nobody calls an engineer because things are going well.

They call because the roof is leaking. The walls are cracking. The contractor walked off the job. Or because the bank refuses to issue the next construction disbursement without a site assessment.

By the time we show up, something is already at stake. And here's what troubles me most about that: in too many Caribbean communities, engineering is still treated as a luxury. It's seen as something for big commercial builds and foreign developers. Not as a necessity for the family putting everything they have into their first home or the small business owner expanding in Roseau or Castries.

That mindset is costing us more than we know. When structures fail in the Caribbean, they fail dramatically, during disasters, when the people inside have nowhere else to go. We’ve seen this countless times in Dominica.

Those are the moments when it becomes clear that the engineer would have been worth the upfront investment. Engineers are not the expensive option, we are the insurance policy against failure.

Our real job isn't just producing drawings. Our job is to:

· See the problem before the client knows it exists

· Design for disasters we know are coming

· Translate complexity for families making once-in-a-generation investments

· Make expert guidance more accessible, not a privilege reserved for a few

What builds lasting relationships and peace of mind across the Eastern Caribbean, everywhere really, is the confidence a client feels knowing someone with real expertise had eyes on their investment before the first block was ever laid. That's what we show up to do.

What's been your experience? Do you think engineering is still seen as out of reach in our region? I'd love to hear your perspective.
