Being in the desert doesn’t mean we should create a static, inhuman built environment.
In one of our recent landscape and architectural projects, we challenged the old narrative that arid land demands rigid, isolated structures. The desert is not empty — it is layered, adaptive, and intelligent. It holds wind patterns, thermal gradients, biodiversity systems, and cultural memory.
Today, integrating emerging global trends is not optional — it is essential.
🌿 Biophilic Design
Inspired by the principles articulated by thinkers like Edward O. Wilson, we embedded nature as an experiential system — not decoration.
• Visual and non-visual connections to nature
• Native planting integrated into architecture
• Sensory landscapes (texture, scent, shade, movement)
• Courtyard ecosystems that regulate microclimate
🌍 Nature-Based Solutions (NbS)
Aligned with frameworks promoted by UN Environment Programme, we incorporated ecological strategies that work as infrastructure:
• Stormwater harvesting and greywater reuse
• Drought-tolerant, biodiversity-supporting species
• Soil regeneration strategies
🏙 Regenerative & Climate-Responsive Design
Beyond sustainability — we aim for regeneration.
• Passive cooling through massing and orientation
• Wind corridors and shaded pedestrian networks
• Material palettes that reduce heat gain and embodied carbon
🤝 Human-Centered & Inclusive Urbanism
Following global dialogues shaped by platforms such as World Urban Forum, we ensured:
• Walkable, shaded public realms
• Social interaction nodes
• Cultural continuity within contemporary forms
The key lesson?
Landscape is not a background. Architecture is not an object.
They are one ecological and social system.
The desert is alive — and when we design with empathy, intelligence, and innovation, our built environments become alive too.

In the Orman Landscape & Urban City Project, we faced a complex urban challenge: designing an aviary at the heart of a historic botanical zoo, embedded within one of the highest-density urban fabrics and surrounded by intensive traffic corridors on all sides.
The most critical challenge was the structural integration—how to carefully anchor and plant a large-scale aviary structure within a sensitive botanical ecosystem, while responding to urban constraints, environmental conditions, and mobility networks.
At this point, I truly appreciated the value of being trained across architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design—disciplines that collectively shape a problem-solving mindset. Through a multidisciplinary approach, we mapped the urban context, planting strategies, human circulation patterns, animal behavior, and microclimatic factors.
This integrated analysis helped us identify the optimal heights, locations, and spatial configurations to ensure structural stability, environmental harmony, animal well-being, and an enhanced visitor experience—proving once again that successful urban landscapes emerge from the intersection of ecology, structure, and human-centered design.

Trying to understand how to integrate vertical landscape within our growing cities — not just as green resilient and decorative, but as functional, living infrastructure.
As our urban environments become more dense, the need for healthier, greener, and more resilient spaces becomes essential. Vertical landscape can transform unused walls and urban voids into breathing green corridors — improving air quality, enhancing biodiversity, and offering human-centered wellbeing moments in every corner of the city.
Deeply inspired by the work of Ar. June Chow and Mohamed Fendi, together explore the fascinating intersection between architecture, nature, and community. These contributions continue to prove that greener cities are not just a vision — they are a responsibility.

As part of the IFLA Heritage Working Group's Webinar held on November 19th, Rasha Sayed delivered an insightful presentation titled “Orman Heritage Garden (Cairo) & George Town (Penang): Interactions Across Two City Cases.”
📄 Attached is the lecture PDF. Below are some thought-provoking questions related to heritage landscape architecture raised by Ana Bajcura for more discussion after the lecture:
George Town, Penang, Malaysia Case
- Do you know of any heritage practice cases in your country or other sites? Please share!
- Have you encountered similar integration challenges with the local community as experienced in George Town? How were they addressed?
Orman Heritage Botanical Garden & Giza Zoo - Cairo, Egypt Case
- What childhood landscape heritage experiences resonate with you, and why?
- What landscape heritage experiences do you see in today's childhood/teenage generations? Are they connected with landscape or cultural heritage?
- If not, what ideas can you propose to bridge this gap?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!

Living in Sharm el-Sheik has completely transformed how I see the idea of re-inhabiting Egypt’s deserts. For years, we looked at the desert and asked one question:
“How can we bring water to the desert so people can live there?”
It always felt like the biggest barrier to unlocking millions of hectares of land.
But my perspective changed.
When you live in a place like Sharm El Sheikh, where harshness and beauty coexist, you begin to understand something deeper: the desert is not empty, it’s honest. It doesn’t pretend, it doesn’t hide, and it doesn’t compromise. And maybe our problem wasn’t the lack of water… but the way we’ve been trying to build against the desert instead of with it.
Yes, water is essential.
But water doesn’t have to come only from traditional sources.
With our greatest natural resource—the sun—we can generate water in entirely new ways: solar desalination, atmospheric water harvesting, solar-powered groundwater extraction, and integrated energy-water-food systems. The solutions are already here.
And beyond technology, there’s a deeper shift we need:
We must learn to build with the desert’s nature, not fight it.
To design like the dunes, adaptive, fluid, resilient.
To build like the mountains rooted, shaped by wind and time.
To create communities that don’t impose themselves on the land, but grow from it organically.
Egypt’s deserts are not obstacles.
They are teachers showing us how to live lightly, wisely, and sustainably.
They are opportunities for regenerative cities, productive landscapes, wellness destinations, ecological tourism, and new economic pathways.
All it takes is a mindset shift:
Stop imagining the desert as a challenge to conquer.
Start imagining it as a partner in shaping our future.
Sometimes, living a little closer to the sun changes everything.
Our questions about the ongoing research which will be published soon.
