This scene is from the portico of the wonderful tomb of Petosiris at Tuna el-Gebel in Middle Egypt. Petosiris was the High Priest of Thoth at Hermopolis during the late Persian and early Ptolemaic Period and the style of the art in his tomb displays a fusion of classical Egyptian and Greek influences

In this scene, a man harvests crops using a billhook, while behind him a young boy gathers papyrus flowers.. He has a typical Hellenistic hair style and beard, and wears the Greek tunic called a "chiton" - very different to the kilt seen in earlier periods of Egyptian history. The scene is carved in very high quality raised relief.

An Egyptian archaeological mission has uncovered a remarkable collection of remains at Tell al Abqain in Beheira Governorate.
🌟 The discoveries offer a glimpse into the lives of soldiers and families inside a New Kingdom fortress built to defend Egypt’s western Delta frontier.
🌟 The finds include homes, grain stores, ovens, a carefully buried horse and inscriptions bearing the names of King Ramesses II and King Merneptah.
🌟 The discoveries provide a broader picture of the fortress, going beyond its military role to reveal how its inhabitants lived, stored food and practiced their religious beliefs.
🌟 Excavations uncovered a large mud-brick residential complex built around a main street about four meters wide. A second street crosses it and connects with the fortress’s southern limestone entrance, showing the organized layout of the settlement.
🌟 Inside the rooms, archaeologists found grain silos, pottery ovens and large jars that still contained carbonized wheat.
🌟 Together, the finds paint a vivid picture of daily life behind the fortress walls, where food had to be stored, prepared and managed for those living far from Egypt’s main population centers.
🌟 Nearby, the mission discovered residential rooms close to three stone wells bearing titles of Ramesses II.
🌟 One of the most striking discoveries was the complete burial of a young male horse. Preliminary studies suggest it belonged to a medium-sized, agile breed that may have been used for military training or to pull chariots. The position of the horse suggests it was deliberately and carefully buried, possibly as an act of honor.
🌟 Just a few meters away, archaeologists found alabaster and limestone pieces believed to have formed part of a chariot horse harness.
🌟 The mission also found part of a limestone stela with a hieratic inscription from the reign of Merneptah, as well as another fragment carrying the birth, throne and Horus names of Ramesses II.
🌟 Other discoveries include scarabs bearing the names of Ramesses II and Seti I, religious amulets, pottery, weaving weights, grinding stones and personal ornaments.

This was once a quarry for the pyramids.

Thousands of years later, the scars of stone extraction are still visible at Giza—traces of the enormous blocks cut by ancient Egyptian workers to build monuments for eternity.

This isn’t just a pyramid… it’s a message from a civilization that refused to be forgotten. 🇪🇬

Standing at Giza, the Great Pyramid and the Great Sphinx have survived for thousands of years, witnessing generations come and go.

The Great Pyramid was built for Pharaoh Khufu and was once the tallest man-made structure in the world. Nearby, the Great Sphinx, carved from limestone, has the body of a lion and a human head.

What makes Giza truly extraordinary is the knowledge, craftsmanship, and organization required to create monuments that have endured for millennia. 🏺✨

Thousands of years later, they still leave us with one unforgettable question:

How did they build something this magnificent?

Faces from Roman Egypt, separated from us by nearly 2,000 years — yet strikingly familiar.

The Fayum portraits were not idealized gods or pharaohs, but portraits of real people whose faces survived across the centuries.

Ancient portraits vs. AI reconstructions — history looking back at us.

The head of a statue depicting a Ptolemaic queen, possibly Cleopatra II or III, before and after it was excavated and cleaned on the seabed.

This granodiorite statue was found in several pieces in Abu Qir Bay, approximately 32 kilometres (about 19 miles) northeast of Alexandria, in Egypt. It depicts a queen dressed as the Egyptian goddess Isis and it once stood in the port city of Thonis-Heracleion, which was submerged beneath the waves due to many factors, including soil liquefaction, rising sea levels, earthquakes and possibly tsunamis and tidal flooding. The statue probably dates to the 2nd century BC; it is 2.2 metres (about seven feet) tall.

See comment section for full statue.
