من 79 سنة، وتحديدًا زي النهارده سنة 1947، إيه كان مفهوم "الثقافة" في العالم العربي؟

في بلدة بيت مري اللبنانية، اتجمع نُخبة من كبار المفكرين والأدباء وقادة الرأي في أول مؤتمر ثقافي عربي. المؤتمر وقتها ماكنش بيناقش "الثقافة" بمفهومها الشائع دلوقتي، لكن ركّز على عناصر ومحددات جوهرية اتصنفت وقتها إنها الركائز الأساسية اللي بتبني ثقافة الأمة وترسم هويتها، وده تحت تأثير السياق التاريخي والسياسي والأيديولوجي اللي كانت بتمر بيه المنطقة.

رحلة ملهمة بتورينا إزاي اتطورت رؤية العالم العربي للثقافة على مدار 8 عقود، من مجرد أداة للنضال وصياغة الهوية الوطنية، لمفهوم أوسع وأشمل بيعبر عن الإبداع والتنوع.

What did "culture" mean in the Arab world 79 years ago?

On this very day in 1947, in the town of Beit Meri, Lebanon, the First Arab Cultural Conference convened, bringing together a group of leading intellectuals, writers, and thought leaders from across the region. At the time, the conference did not view culture through its contemporary lens, but instead focused on core elements and determinants seen as the foundational pillars of the nation’s culture and identity, heavily influenced by the era's historical, political, and ideological context.

It marks an inspiring journey reflecting how the Arab world's perspective on culture has evolved over eight decades, from a tool for national identity and political struggle to a broader, more inclusive concept of creativity and diversity.

Culture isn’t an isolated space; it is the real engine intersecting with every vital domain. At Agora for Cultural Development, we view culture in its broadest sense, as a essential touchpoint between education, development, public policy, and the creative economy, and many other sectors, ensuring the cultural dimension remains active and present in every developmental and organizational step.

In your opinion, which sector needs the most focus in terms of its intersection with culture?

لما بنتكلم عن «العدالة الثقافية»، فالسؤال مش بس: عندنا كام قصر ثقافة أو مكتبة في مصر؟ لكن السؤال الحقيقي: مين فعليًا بيقدر يستفيد من المساحات دي؟ وهل هي مجهزة ومتاحة للجميع؟

في الجزء التاني من السلسلة، بنتعمق أكتر في مفهومي الإتاحة واللامركزية، وبنسأل عن الجاهزية والتنوع، ودور الأطراف المختلفة -ومن بينها أجورا- في المساهمة في تحقيق عدالة ثقافية حقيقية.

تفتكروا إيه أول خطوة محتاجينها عشان الثقافة تكون متاحة في كل مكان في مصر؟

Numbers and statistics do not always tell the whole story.

When we talk about cultural justice, the question is not only how many cultural palaces or libraries exist in Egypt. The real question is: Who can actually benefit from these spaces? And are they equipped and accessible to everyone?

In Part Two of the series, we take a closer look at accessibility and decentralisation, exploring readiness, diversity, and the roles of different stakeholders -including Agora- in contributing to genuine cultural justice.

لما نقول إن الثقافة حق للجميع، لازم نسأل كيفية وصول الحق دا، ودا بيشمل أبعاد كتير، منها توزيع الخدمات الثقافية.

Does where you live determine your access to cultural services?

When we say that culture is a right for everyone, we need to ask how people can exercise that right. This involves several dimensions, including the distribution of cultural services.

In the first post of our “Cultural Justice in Egypt” series, we examine the distribution of selected cultural spaces and services.

The figures reveal clear disparities in distribution across governorates, but they also raise a more important question: Can the number and distribution of cultural spaces alone indicate whether culture is genuinely accessible?

In the second part, we will revisit these figures from a different perspective and reflect together: When do cultural spaces provide meaningful access? And what is the current state of the right to culture and cultural justice in Egypt?

أغنية "لولا البنات" لعمرو دياب لما نزلت في الأول، ناس كتير شافتها غريبة عن نسق أغانيه المعتاد، لكن لما نزل الكليب، طريقة الاستقبال اتغيرت تمامًا.

الصورة ماكنتش مجرد ديكور أو خلفية بصرية، الصورة صنعت السياق. وجود الملابس الريفية، الرقصات الشعبية، والربابة والسقفة، أعاد تقديم الأغنية للجمهور باعتبارها استلهام من الفولكلور، مش مجرد اختيار فني عابر.

التعامل مع الفولكلور وتوظيفه في أعمال معاصرة محتاج أكتر من مجرد استدعاء الشكل الخارجي؛ محتاج فهم حقيقي للسياق وإعادة صياغته بلغة قريبة من جمهور النهارده.

When Amr Diab’s song "Lola El Banat" was first released, many found it unconventional compared to his signature style. However, the music video completely shifted public perception.

The visuals did more than set the scene, they created context. Rural attire, folk dance, the rababa, and rhythmic clapping reframed the track as a deliberate engagement with Egyptian folklore rather than a casual aesthetic choice.

Contemporary adaptation of heritage requires more than imagery; it demands cultural understanding and a language that connects with today's audience.
