I asked two wine websites the same simple question: "wine for steak."
20 years on the shop floor and I still wanted to see what each one would do.
The UK site (filters and search) came back with:
🍊 A bottle of orange wine
🫚 Stone's green ginger wine
🍷 A Dubonnet

The Australian site? It asked me the cut, the cooking method and my budget. Then recommended something that actually made sense, the way a good shop assistant would.

That's the gap. One returns keywords. One has a conversation. Customers don't want a search bar. They want someone who knows the shelf. 👇

Which result would keep you on the page?

Most Shopify stores treat every visitor the same. Someone can browse five product pages, add something to cart, leave, come back the next day and land on the exact same generic homepage. Their intent just disappears between sessions.

Why Most Shopify Stores Treat Returning Visitors Like Strangers 21/05/2026

A shopper visits your store. She browses three pairs of running shoes, checks the sizing guide, adds one to cart, then leaves. Two days later she comes back, same browser, same device, clearly still interested and lands on a homepage full of handbags, candles and a hero banner promoting a summer sale she’s already seen.

Why Most Shopify Stores Treat Returning Visitors Like Strangers And what mid-market merchants can do about it, without enterprise software or a six-month integration.

Ever feel like that looking at the wine selection?

Filters are killing wine sales online. You land on a wine site. You want a bottle for dinner tonight. You type "red wine not too dry goes with pasta" into the search bar and get zero results.

So you try the filters.
First filter: Appellation.
Varietal. Country. Vintage. Residual sugar.....

You just wanted something nice for a Wednesday night.

This happens all day on wine sites across the world. Not because the customer didn't want to buy. Because the site couldn't understand plain English.

🍷 If your online store still relies on filters, you're losing sales to people who know exactly what they want but just can't say it in your language.

20 years on the shop floor told me what wine retailers actually need. So I built it.
