📉 Empirical Link to Wage Gaps: Quantitative analysis of EU member states reveals a statistically significant positive relationship between longer parental leave duration and wider gender wage gaps.

⚠️ Comparative Case Evidence: Evidence from Czechia shows how extended leave up to four years without early childcare drives a high gender pay gap. Conversely, Belgium's shorter leave model and Sweden's balanced system with dedicated father's quotas mitigate labor market detachment.

🌸 Early Childcare Access: Universal, affordable public childcare for children under three is critical to preventing long-term workforce detachment and supporting mothers' early return to work.

🏡 Strategic Policy Recommendations: The brief outlines targeted EU actions: setting an optimal EU-wide leave duration benchmark, mandating non-transferable gender-balanced quotas, expanding childcare access, and conditioning EU funding on gender equality outcomes.

Did you know that Hungary's recent political shift has created a unique opportunity to reform sexuality education? Our latest policy brief, written by Erika Molnár and supervised by Siya Goyal, examines how the incoming Tisza government's parliamentary supermajority provides the constitutional scope to repeal restrictive legislation and rebuild evidence-based sexual health instruction.

Key Insights from the Research:

🏛️ A Constitutional Window for Reform: Following the April 2026 elections, the Tisza government holds a two-thirds majority, giving it the constitutional capacity to amend or repeal Act LXXIX of 2021.

📜 Legislative Barriers to CSE: Act LXXIX of 2021 banned content portraying or promoting homosexuality and gender reassignment to minors and introduced an accreditation process that barred independent NGOs and external experts from school classrooms.

⚖️ International & Legal Obligations: Hungary remains bound by treaties such as the ICESCR and the CRC. Additionally, an April 2026 CJEU ruling affirmed that the 2021 law breaches core EU values by discriminating against LGBTQI+ individuals.

📚 The Evidence Base for CSE: Well-structured, expert-led Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) is consistently linked to higher health literacy, delayed sexual initiation, and better overall educational outcomes for young people.

🎯 Strategic Recommendations: The brief outlines key actions: revoking the restrictive clauses of Act LXXIX, establishing a national CSE curriculum aligned with UNESCO's 2018 guidance, re-engaging accredited NGOs, and embedding youth participation.

Our latest research paper analyzes how recent reductions in global foreign assistance exacerbate the healthcare crisis in conflict-affected Sudan. This critical global health paper is authored by Roisin Malone and edited by Laura Coburn.

Key Insights from the Research:

🏥 Escalating Humanitarian Need: Ongoing armed conflict has left 33.7 million people in Sudan requiring humanitarian assistance, with 21 million in urgent need of health services.

📉 Global Aid Retrenchment: Following a peak of 80.3 billion USD in 2021, global Development Assistance for Health (DAH) shrank significantly, exacerbated by budget cuts from major donor nations and the dismantling of USAID.

⚠️ A "Force Multiplier" for Crisis: Aid cuts act as a force multiplier, amplifying existing challenges such as damaged health infrastructure (over 70% destroyed in conflict areas), attacks on health personnel, and increased risk of disease outbreaks like cholera.

🌸 Critical Gaps in Sexual & Reproductive Health: Funding shortfalls severely impact Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) responses, leaving a funding gap exceeding 100.7 million USD for essential care for women and girls.

🤝 Local Resilience Under Strain: Decentralised community-led initiatives, such as Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs), are filling vital operational gaps but face chronic underfunding and extreme operational dangers.

The EU wants people to feel more confident managing money and investing wisely. But good policy only works if it reflects real life, not just spreadsheets.

Here's what HDRI pushed for:
📌 Teach the money stuff young people actually need — contracts, taxes, starting a business, so no one starts adult life already in debt
📌 Be honest about the risks of crypto and gambling, not just theory
📌 Measure if digital literacy campaigns actually work, more savings, more trust, less fraud
📌 Help people spot and question AI-generated financial advice 🤖

France's public funding for international cooperation is facing an unprecedented crisis. 📉 Since 2021, the development aid budget has been slashed by a staggering 48%.

The human cost? Devastating. A new report by Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) estimates that these budget cuts could lead to over 3.5 million avoidable deaths by 2030. ⚠️

As a French CSO dedicated to research and advocacy around human development, we cannot stay silent. 🛑 We know firsthand that policy must be driven by data and a commitment to human rights. Slashing these critical funds dismantles global progress and threatens the world's most vulnerable communities.

International aid isn't just a budget line, it’s the foundation of a stable, equitable world. 🌱 We stand united with our fellow organizations to demand better.

July 9-12, our team joined the Youth and Environment Europec(YEE) in Prague for two major events:

🎓 Summer University (9–10 July) — workshops on Just Transition, energy literacy, climate justice, biodiversity, and greenwashing
🗳️ General Assembly (11–12 July) — YEE's highest decision-making gathering, bringing together 29+ member organisations from across Europe

Representing HDRI were our Migration & Security Research Coordinator Guglielmo Barbetta and our intern Sarka Neumannova 🙌 — proud to see our network's work reflected in these spaces!

We're also proud to share that HDRI has officially signed the Arzni Declaration on Transforming Environmental Conflicts 📜✍️, co-created in May by 25 young people from across Europe with support from the Council of Europe's European Youth Foundation. The declaration calls for ecological justice, youth participation in decision-making, and accountability for environmental destruction — values that sit at the heart of our own mission.
