Anyone can use a Defib but attending a course and actually having a go before you have to use one for real can be incredibly valuable.

The next one day courses here in Llanberis are:

Tuesday 17th November
Wednesday 18th November

We start at 9am and finish at 4.30pm.

Get in touch if you are interested in coming along.

Using a defib within the first 3-5 minutes of collapse can increase the chance of surviving a cardiac arrest by 50-70%.

Yet the most recent data from University of Warwick shows that public access defibrillators were only used in 9% of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in England in 2024.

It's vital we remove the fear around using defibs and help the public feel more confident using these lifesaving devices.

EMERGENCY BLEED CONTROL KIT

Would you know what to do if someone suffered a catastrophic bleed?

One of the ladies from my recent first aid course sent me this great photo, from a Facebook post, of a Bleed Control Kit on Bangor High Street.

Last week, we spent time looking at catastrophic bleeding and bleed ‘grab bags’ — including how and when to use a trauma bandage and tourniquet. These are simple skills that can make a real difference while waiting for the emergency services to arrive.

You never know when you might find yourself in a situation where those skills are needed.

If you’d like to learn what to do, my next one-day First Aid courses are:

Tuesday 17th November
Wednesday 18th November
📍 At Boulder Adventures, Llanberis

Courses can be certificated as Workplace EFAW or Basic First Aid.

If you’d like to book a place or find out more, DM me or visit www.activefirstaid.co.uk

Learn the skills. Be prepared. You could make a difference.

DOG BITE- WHAT SHOULD YOU DO

On the first aid course yesterday we had a chat about dog bites. Even a small dog bite can cause infection, so knowing what to do afterwards is important.

If the skin has been broken:

1. Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and warm running water.

2. If it isn’t already bleeding, gently encourage a little bleeding from the wound. This can help flush out bacteria.

If it’s bleeding heavily, apply firm pressure with a clean cloth or dressing until the bleeding is controlled.

3. Once you’ve cleaned it, gently pat the area dry and cover it with a clean dressing (I use iodine dressings for this type of injury).

When should you seek medical advice? Contact NHS 111 if:

• The wound contains dirt, hair, teeth or other debris
• The area becomes hot, swollen, increasingly painful or red/darker
• You develop a high temperature, feel shivery or unwell
• Fluid starts coming from the wound or it develops an unpleasant smell
• You’ve been bitten on your hand, foot, face or head
• You haven’t had a tetanus vaccination within the last 10 years

And don’t forget — dog bites can look deceptively small on the surface but still cause significant damage underneath.

Go to A&E if:

• The wound is large or deep
• You cannot stop the bleeding
• A piece of the body has been torn off! Take the body part with you!

WORLD FIRST AID DAY: SEPTEMBER 12th

Today is a great reminder that first aid is a skill everyone should have.

You don’t need to be a doctor or nurse. You just need to know what to do when someone is in need such as when they are choking, bleeding, unconscious or has a cardiac arrest.

Because when something goes wrong, doing something is better than doing nothing.

Fancy learning some potentially life-saving skills?

ONE DAY FIRST AID

Would you know what to do if someone collapsed and their heart stops whilst at home?

Around 80% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (the heart has stopped) happen at home — which is why knowing basic first aid and CPR really can make the difference when it matters most.

I have spaces available on my One Day Basic First Aid Courses on 15th & 16th September, held at Boulder Adventures here in Llanberis.

You can choose to have the course certificated as Workplace Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or Basic First Aid.

Don’t wait until you need these skills — make sure you have them. ❤️

Boulder Adventures, Llanberis
One-day course

BASIC FIRST AID COURSE — BECAUSE “HOLD ON, I’LL GOOGLE IT” IS NOT A FIRST AID PLAN

You know that moment when someone gets hurt and suddenly everyone becomes a medical expert?

“Put butter on it.”
“Give them some water.”
“Rub it.”
“Don’t move them!”
“Actually… move them!”
“Has anyone got a plaster?”

Meanwhile, the casualty is lying there wondering why they didn’t just stay in bed that morning.

My one-day Basic First Aid Course will teach you what to actually do when something goes wrong — without panicking, freezing or resorting to advice from Dave down the pub.

You just need to know enough to make a difference when it matters.

Where: Boulder Adventures, Llanberis
When: September 15th & 16th
What: One-day course (certificated as Basic or EFAW)

Come along, learn some genuinely useful skills, have a laugh and leave knowing that if someone collapses in front of you, your first thought won’t be: “Oh bugger… what do I do now?”
