The hype is real… but is the food? 👀
We kicked off our first Speak Truth session of the year by diving into the internet’s wildest food trends. The verdict? Never try a new food trend without a friend to laugh with.
At the end of the day, Speak Truth isn’t just about hot takes. It’s about connection, curiosity, and creating space for students to share their perspectives.

Knowing your students is no small task. In fact, Dr. Michelle Edwards calls it a “huge, gargantuan responsibility.”
But what if knowing your students is also an opportunity to discover what helps them thrive?
In this week’s episode of Hooray For Monday, Eric Hollister Williams and Michelle continue exploring E: Engagement in the ABCDE of Learner Needs. They talk about why building relationships with learners matters, how paying attention can reveal what students need, and what something as simple as where a student sits can teach us about creating space for them to do their best work.
Because when we take the time to know our learners, we can move beyond what we think they should need and make room for what actually helps them engage.

What’s interesting, important, and useful to your learners? 👀
Connecting learning to what students already care about can open the door to deeper engagement. From Pokémon and math to fashion and literature, the possibilities are endless when we invite students to help us make the connections.
Use these reflection sheets to discover what matters to your learners, then take the exploration further with our full “Interesting, Important, and Useful” lesson from the archive.

Students are constantly learning new things—but they may not always recognize how much they already know.
This reflection sheet and community-building activity gives students an opportunity to reflect on their own competence, recognize past successes, and share their expertise with one another.
When students see themselves as capable learners—and learn from the strengths of their peers—they build confidence, connection, and community. These conversations can also become reference points students return to when they face new challenges.
What is something your students already know how to do that they could teach someone else?

Developmental appropriateness starts with listening.
Every learner is on their own developmental journey. Instead of assuming what students need, ask them: Is this too hard? Too easy? What would help you grow?
When we treat students as experts in their own learning, we create the “sweet spot” where challenge meets curiosity.
