Calligraphy, lettering and Art in Linlithgow.

I just want to say thank you to everyone for their patience and understanding, messages and support over the past couple of months.
It’s been a whirlwind of scans and appointments and ultimately surgery to fix my sciatica and “massive herniated disc” - in the words of my surgeon.
I am slowly coming back into some words at my new sit/stand desk. This time round I am definitely not going to turn into the hunched-back calligraphy gremlin that I was before (!)
Looking forward to getting back to it 💪🏻 (even if it’s only a word a day).
Look after yourselves and if you’re reading this to the bottom - just a reminder for a posture check 💜

I have been working on this project for a while. When the sun came out this week, I headed to the garden to paint and a lot of unplanned flowers flowed through my paintbrush.
I also doubly challenged myself into writing some italic to make the quote stand out a little - rather than my usual pointed pen.
This quote went through a lot of iterations of scripts before I settled on italic.
What's your favourite garden bird?

Today's blog is about stepping away from my Engrosser’s Script rabbit hole and going back to where it all began… uncial ✨

With my uncial class coming up this weekend, I wanted to get back to basics before teaching on Sunday. Uncial was the very first script I ever learned, and I always forget how calming it feels until I come back to it.

Instead of writing a single word or short quote (and then over-analysing every stroke 😅), I challenged myself to write a longer passage. It’s such a good reminder that sometimes the magic isn’t in perfection… it’s in the texture and rhythm of the whole piece.

And can we talk about this ink colour?! I’m obsessed. It works so beautifully with both my pointed pen and broad edge.

📖 If you recognise the text I copied, tell me in the comments… there’s a BIG clue in there somewhere 👀

Glaucous as a color word can describe things of two rather different shades: a light bluish-gray or bluish-white color, or a pale yellow-green. It can also mean “having a powdery or waxy coating that gives a frosted appearance and tends to rub off.”
