Holding Difficult Conversations
One of the most important skills for an Action Learning facilitator isn’t having all the answers. It’s being able to hold the space when the conversation gets difficult.
What do you do when:
• A question challenges someone’s assumptions?
• A participant becomes defensive?
• Silence feels uncomfortable?
• Two people strongly disagree?
• The conversation starts to go beneath the surface?
Great facilitation isn’t about avoiding discomfort. It’s about creating enough trust and challenge for people to stay with it, think differently and learn from it.
That takes skill, confidence and practice.
What’s the most difficult conversation you’ve had to hold as a facilitator?
Are your managers too helpful? How Action Learning can help people to help themselves.
