Reminder: next week - Richard Price and America’s Revolution with Roly Keating

Join Roly Keating, former Chief Executive of the British Library and Controller of BBC Two and Four, on 25th June for an evening talk.

In the run-up to the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, this event offers a chance to bring our early Minister Richard Price’s distinctive voice and ideas back to life, and to reflect on their relevance to contemporary and still-urgent debates about freedom, rights and society, including in America itself.

Joining Roly for a panel discussion and Q&A after his talk with be Michael Goldfarb, presenter of BBC Radio 4’s upcoming series Mr Jefferson’s Library and the podcast First Rough Draft of History, and Bee Rowlatt, author of books including In Search of Mary and founding trustee of the human rights education charity the Wollstonecraft Society.

‘Good Endings’ - Rev Adam Slate

Endings are inevitable. Whether we are facing the loss of a relationship, the end of a chapter of our life, or our own mortality, how we meet our endings shapes the meaning we take and carry forward from them. In this Sunday gathering, we will explore what it looks like to end well—with intention, honesty, and grace.

Children will join in the chapel and leave for their programme after the first hymn.

Coming this Sunday: 'What Does It Mean to Be Prophetic?' - Rev Adam Slate
In our fictional tales, accounts of prophecy bring to mind predictions of great events or change that the future holds. In biblical stories, prophets have served a different purpose—within this framework, they speak on behalf of the Holy to remind people of their commitment to the Divine, call them to act righteously, and highlight their role in promoting social justice. What does it mean for a Unitarian congregation—where understandings of the sacred vary widely—to be prophetic today at a time when organised spiritual and religious movements are in flux, social turmoil is deepening and ideological divides are widening? The New Unity choir will be singing at this service!

Note: There will be no Kids Club this week. All ages will join together in the chapel.

Come join Rev Adam on Friday 3rd July for one of his annual traditions: screening his favourite summer blockbuster film! Our licensing doesn't allow us to advertise the title outside of the congregation, so get on our mailing list or come to a Sunday gathering for more details. (Or just come and be surprised!)

Bring a snack or drink to share and socialise at 6.30; the movie will start promptly at 7.00. The event is free and all are welcome. Note: the film is rated 12 for infrequent strong language and occasional mild bad language.

Although most of us hope to be able to influence the world around us, we are often subject to circumstances beyond our control. Plans change, illnesses strike, machines break, a nearby football club's celebratory parade disrupts travel to and from your Sunday gathering. Resilience often comes from expecting the unexpected and being willing to roll with it. With these tools in our arsenal, we can weather surprises and finish at the top of our league!

Did you know that NU has a meditation group?

No gods, no gurus: meditation group meets on Tuesdays at the Newington Green Meeting House.

We are implementing a non-hierarchical approach to meditation, where the focus lies on the practice and experience of the process itself, rather than the theory behind it. The purpose of this endeavour is for each participant to deepen their own practice, while gaining support from and exchanging ideas with the group, should they so choose.

Our process consists of two 20 minute quiet meditation sessions, with a short 5 minute break in-between, followed by a voluntary discussion of the experience.

The sessions are being held in the basement (Barbauld room). Please use the building’s side door. Start time 6pm.

With the help of Mr Plumbean and Lizzie Cox, a Unitarian and UU religious educator, we will explore the wisdom and work of making our spaces embody our spirits, welcome us in, and look like all our dreams.
