Richmond Town Centre Vision 2/3
Where the Vision defines long-term ambition, the Activation Plan focuses on what can be done now and next to bring that ambition to life.
It identifies projects that will create more inclusive streets and public spaces, diversify town centre and riverside uses, better serve young people and families, and strengthen Richmond’s role as both a local town centre and a wider destination.
An initial £1.5 million budget has been approved to progress four priority projects:
• Whittaker Square and Avenue – creating a greener, more purposeful public space linking the town centre and riverside.
• George Street – transforming the street into a more pedestrian-friendly leisure and retail destination, addressing air pollution through a reduction in vehicular movement, increasing greenery, and increasing opportunities for social and cultural activity, play, and business spill-out.
• Little Green – delivering a high-quality, nature-sensitive play space in the town centre.
• Wayfinding Strategy – improving connections between the town centre, green spaces, and riverside, while strengthening Richmond’s identity through public art, interpretation and storytelling.

HemingwayDesign has been working with the alongside and Urban Movement, to develop a Vision for Richmond town centre.
Richmond’s challenge isn’t its reputation. Known for its beautiful riverside, green spaces, and rich history, it already has a strong identity. The opportunity now is to broaden perceptions, showcase a more diverse offer, attract new audiences, support future generations, and respond to climate and environmental challenges.
The Richmond Town Centre Vision sets out what the town can become over the next 5, 10 and 15+ years, anchored by three Place-shaping Pillars:
-Global City Energy Meets Market Town Charm
-Space to Breathe: Escapism, Exploration & Enrichment
-Natural Leaders: Champions of Environmental Action & Social Value
Together, these pillars provide a framework for future investment, decision-making and change in Richmond town centre.

From sports and gardening to creative workshops, play, talks, live music, performance, DJs, dancing, food, drink, and shopping, we celebrated all the ways we enjoy our free time in the place where the weekend was invented.
A huge thank you to everyone who came along to get hands-on, observe, to make and shake. And a big thanks to the key partners who help us make it happen: , , , , our brilliant workshop facilitators and content partners, volunteers, and traders - without whom this event just simply wouldn’t be able to happen.
We’re looking forward to doing it all again next June!
